Driving from Madrid to Bilbao - where should I stop for a night?
Hi there,
I'm travelling from Madrid to Bilbao by car in a few weeks and would like to break up the drive by staying one night in a city along the way. Any recommendations?
Thank you!

If you are flying in on the same day, then Lerma (at the Parador) or Burgos (Hotel AC or NH) would be my first choice. Burgos is about a 2-1/2 hour drive and Lerma has some excellent restaurants. See Maribel's Guides to the Rioja (www.maribelsguides.com).

Whilst I also like Burgos, I am going to suggest somewhere more off the tourist path by visiting Soria.

If you had enough time, and won't see anything but cities otherwise, I would make use of the liberty of having a car to explore a bit of rural/ off A-1 Spain going north, e.g. like via Soria which PP mentioned. Driving through the countryside and stop in villages or towns that have not made it into any "Must see" guidebooks can often be quite rewarding..

As nice is Soria (the city) is, the Parador is great and there are a few interesting restaurants, but there really isn't that much to see or do unless you're there for the fiesta. And if you're driving after flying internationally, you might not quite be up to exploring the province after a nice lunch and a few glasses of good wine. Burgos is far more interesting.

Burgos is an excellent choice.A city in El camino de Santiago ,not to big not too small.Stay overnight , a good choice is the boutique hotel Melia Fernan Gonzalez, not expensive has the plus of offering set
price dinners and lunches of very good quality for a low price.
The cathedral is a must, as theCartuja de Miraflores recently renovated, and the Monastery of
Las Huelgas.
