I agree with you Traveller 1959, but since I'm travelling with my teenager son (not my wife), the Taschenberg may not be as appropriate. I only pamper my wife, but prefer to show my son a more standard mode of travel including showing the ropes of public transport instead of taking taxis.

Hi Ingo,
I'm getting concerned about the rising Pegel of the Elbe. Should I consider flying into Prague instead of taking the train? I'm not sure whether the railtracks are in the lower land where the flood may reach. Wasn't the Dresden Hauptbahnhof flooded & damaged in 2002? I appreciate it if you can tell me how bad is it now or it's going to be by Easter. I may need to buy my airplane tickets now if the train can't reach Prague.

Hi DAX,
Fodorite Fritzl started another thread about the flood in Dresden - did you see it?
No problems with the trains to Prague. Business colleagues from Prague are going to attend a meeting in Dresden on Monday and I checked with the Deutsche Bahn yesterday. They said that the trains are running as usual. The Elbe pegel was 9.40 max in 2002 and the max pegel for the current flood is expected for Tuesday at 7.80 m. So the railroads in the Elbe valley are not affected.
Re: Hauptbahnhof - it was not flooded by the Elbe, but by the small river Weisseritz. The problem in 2002 was that the Erzgebirge received 16 inches rain within 48 hours and even the smallest river quickly turned to torrent. The Weisseritz flooded the old town and the Hauptbahnhof. No such problem this year.
The floods might affect your day trip to Bastei, though. The ferry is out of operation in Rathen (like all the others along the Elbe) and won't be back before Easter. I'll keep you updated. When are you leaving?
