>carry on only

That would be difficult because Alitalia's carry-on weight limit is 5kg (11 pounds).

We flew Alitalia to Firenze via Milano a few years ago - had no problems.
We had carry on luggage only ,no one bothered to check its weight.

The last and final time I flew Alitalia was 10 months ago and had no problem with carry-on.

I flew Alitalia in June round trip. Everything was on time and had we no problems. I speak Italian and the stewards were very nice to me. Who knows I have many horrors stories with many different ailines. I guess its a roll of the dice. Airfrance just landed in my city when enrouted from Chicago. They would not let their passengers off the darn plane for 7 hours!! Imagine that. No food, no air, no explanation. Sounded horrible!

I responded to this in another Alitalia thread, but will briefly repeat that they lost ALL our DD's luggage when she travelled last August with them and never responded to her queries (some of which were in Italian, which she is fluent in). They even "lost" her claim in their computer. We have a claim in with our homeowner's insurance now, which is the only recourse she has now, and might be worth checking out for others with this (what seems like a common) problem.

I haven't had issues with lost luggage with them, but do have one warning....depending on the type of Alitalia plane you get, your regulation carry-on luggage may not fit in the tiny, undersized overhead compartments, and they will check your bags....that is, you'll have to stand at baggage claim after your flight! They won't bring your bag to you as you exit the plane. This happened with our wheeled carry-on luggage, which are carry-on size by all other standards.

I am sure many people have flown Alitalia with no problems. That's not the issue. The really big issue is when you have a problem. Alitalia is often unable or unwilling to help in any way. Many of their employees are disgruntled and they probably have good reason to be so.

Try to get Alitalia employess to do something unusual, or even requiring a slight effort outside of their routine. It hasn't worked for me, and I approach all customer service people, especially airline employees, with the utmost politeness.

Alitalia doesn't have customer service. They feel if they ignore you, you will give up.

About the carry-on luggage. If you go by the measurements they give on the websites and don't overstuff them you will get the carryon on the flight.

777 flights that I have taken on different airlines are usually the ones with luggage problems. In my experience, those are the only ones where they have physically checked the size in the rack.

My carry-on, that I use every time, has always made it on every flight. It fits in the rack (frame). I pack for 2 weeks or a month in it.
