Do museums check jackets?

We will be travelling to europe this winter, I understand all about the outdoor temperatures, but have read that museums and attractions are kept warm. My question to that is do museums, and other attractions check coats and jackets, or do you just carry them around yourself?

Honestly, some will, some won't.
The Louvre has a coat check, and the Orsay I believe. I often found some museums in Italy that would not check coats, and some wouldn't even check my tote bag when I asked them to. (You'd think they wouldn't want people with bags walking around right now. Maybe it's a space problem, I don't know.)
I can't say what will happen when you go, but in the past I was not able to check my coat or even my bag at the Uffizi, the Accademia and the Doge's Palace in Venice, nor at St Peter's in Rome.

Thank you so much Mr. Haines, I will be spending a considerable amount of time in London, and the idea of toting my belongings around in a museum was something I was dreading. I would much prefer to have them checked, and be unencumbered to enjoy all of the majestic sites. I have been reading posts on this site for quite some time now, and would like to tell you that I really respect and appreciate all of the information that you have provided. It is refreshing to recieve an honest and helpful reply without unnecessary nastiness.

Thank You again

Janet

The Musee d'Orsay does check coats, back packs and the like. At least they did last spring. I've found it wise to travel light. The wait to check and retrieve can be long.

Janet:

The Prado checks coats, etc. In fact, the guards made us check our water bottles. No explanation--just that they had to be checked. Never did find out why.

j

In Russia all the museums of any size (and I have been to some pretty tiny ones) have coat checks, and it is considered rude to wear a coat while walking about inside a museum, restaurant, concert hall, etc.
