Direct Flight to Rome, A Night in London, Or Something Else?

I need to get to Rome by early July. I'm thinking sometime between June 30 - July 3. A direct flight right now, at it's cheapest, is roughly $1,500 total with Alitalia (round trip, I'm coming back in early August), direct from Boston (I'm flying from Boston).

An alternative is to fly to London, via Virgin, try to make a connecting flight to Rome, or fly British in the morning, land in London at night, stay in a hotel, then fly to Rome the following morning. This would all cost me almost equal to the Alitalia flight.

Or, I could fly elsewhere and connect to a flight in Rome. I'm just struggling to find the best and cheapest option with such little time. The easiest would be to fly direct to Rome with Alitalia.

Thoughts? Suggestions?

We've used the morning flight from BOS to LHR on several occasions (AA for us rather than BA) and find that it dramatically reduces jetlag for the rest of the trip, rather than spending a short and rather sleepless night on a plane (short in that east coast - Europe flights, after post-take off meals and lights-on, doesn't give much time at all for rest.)

We buy Priceline rooms at Heathrow (usually under $100 all in for 4 stars) and are good to go the next day - either in the UK or on the continent.

Have you tried kayak.com? For ex, LH with connection in MUC is $1,300. And I'd certainly trust LH more than Alitalia [in fact 2 - 3 months out I wouldn't get a ticket on Alitalia, but that's my own view].

Hi. Booking two separate flights (Boston to London, London to Rome) will probably be cheaper than a direct flight, but make sure you know which airports you want to fly in and out of. A lot of the cheaper European airlines fly out of Stansted or Luton, which involve a transfer from LHR. If you do choose to fly in two segments, a great resource for narrowing down your cheap airline options in Europe is www.harefares.com. I found 6 airlines that fly from London to Rome so you should have a lot choices.

Take a look at Dublin on Aer Lingus. I'd much rather deal with that airport than London.
I'm seeing RT price of $742 on Kayak. Haven't looked at one ways.

Aer Lingus also has flights Dublin to FCO.

Looking at it more closely, you can fly Delta BOS-DUB for $732. (Thru JFK) Arrive Dublin 7:45am.

Have a nice breakfast, walk around Dublin, depart Dublin (Aer Lingus) 3:20pm, arrive FCO 7:20pm.

On the return you would have to spend the night in Dublin to catch your DUB-BOS flight at 9:30 the next morning.

It looks like the Aer Lingus flights would cost you about 250eu. Total flights probably no more than $1150.
