Destination Advice

My husband and I are planning a trip to Europe next September. We have 10 days - he wants to go to Rome, I want to go to Greece. We are limited in our hotel stays because we are using Hilton Honors Points. Having never been to Europe before, I don't know if it is feasible to do both in 10 days. Any thoughts or suggestions would be greatly appreciated!

Well, I've been to both and it depends on what you want to see. Rome is a wonderful, historic city. I'm not sure I would spend a full 10 days there. There are lots of smaller towns outside of Rome that are wonderful. Where in Greece can you go? I spent 3 days in Athens, and that was plenty. The historic sites are great, but when I was there it was very dirty and the people were rude (not true in the rest of Greece - I traveled all around).

If you could take day trips from either city, that might help. But it really depends on your interests. I loved the Greek islands, but I don't know if there are any Hiltons on any of them...

What are your/his reasons for picking those 2 places? That would probably help us answer this question better.

I think that starting off the planning of a first trip to Europe, with a constraint like only using Hilton Honors rewards stays is a bad idea.

But so much depends on knowing more about you that I will not criticize without more context. I don't know your age, how long it has taken you to accumulate these points, why you feel that you have no other way to use them, why not choose hotels where you can spend money, etc.

Can you have a great first trip to europe with five days in Rome and five days in Greece? Absolutely, I would think (though I have not been back to Greece since I was 15 years old, in 1969 - - I'd like to, though).

But you have to look at the toal "cost" (not only in money but in other decisions you have to make), to use this "freebie".

Best wishes,

Rex
Uh don't forget that Greece is really, really close to Iraq and when Dubya finally starts his own little personal war you might be a bit close to the line of fire.....I would not want to be an American that close to the action when Junior finally gets to be a bully that he never was as a kid

Lynn,
Great to have a free place to stay. Sure helps on the ole budget.
If it's your 1st trip to Europe, you might want to consider just one destination, and take day trips on the train or with tour company. This will make the fist trip an easy experience.
With that said, you could easily do both cities, just remember that you'll have one long day of travel, which means one less day for seeing and doing things.
I'd go to the library and check out travel books on both countries and see what would interest both of you the most. I'm sure you'll love both. Happy travels!
