Deba-Basque country -First week of October
2 mid age couples ,we are looking for a small but not to quiet town to base ourselves between Bilbao and San Sebastian for one week .We plan to use this town to commute into both cities and then hopefully have a nice meal and a few drinks each evening in our base.We are toying with the idea of only hiring a car for 3 days and commute the rest of the time ,is this feasible??
We see that Deba is a nice place but will we be the only people there and is there nice restaurants. There would appear to be nice walks along the coatline here as well.
Any advice and suggestions appreciated

Here is a website for transportation between the 2 cities.
http://www.spaintravelguide.com/gett...nd-return.html
A sample local rental place. http://spain.gabinohome.com/en/rent+room/bilbao
A simple hint. When looking for something local, it's best to go to the local country's google site. You get a lot more 'hits' that way. http://www.google.es/ You'll still find English versions in the local website.

All the coastal villages between Bilbao and San Sebastián are very nice, but Lekeitio would perhaps be my first choice. Pop about 7000, excellent food as well as great landscape and beaches. http://mugalari.wordpress.com/2009/11/23/lekeitio/

Or smaller Getaria, close to San Sebastián, would also be a great option. Several fantastic restaurants. Had the meal of my life down in the harbour here some years ago, something like this: http://www.thepauperedchef.com/2007/...-in-getar.html

Another vote for Lekeitio. I am sorry, but I am not familiar with Deba. Check out the Hotel Zubieta in Lekeitio. Family run, historic buildings, quiet, and my experience has been that the guests are quite congenial. On a bus route between Bilbao and San Sebastian. Leketio is kind of a "one day" destination itself but well situated. I think a car rental for part of the time is a good idea. Nice country and towns throughout the area.

This is the bus schedule; there seem to be 2 daily buses from Deba to San Sebastian.
I checked a random weekday this month.
