Conversions

In a few months, I will be moving to Austria. I understand that Celsius, kilometers, and Euros are used there. Is there a simple way of converting these? If doesn't necessarily have to be exact, but I just need a rough estimate to get a generalized answer.

I am somewhat familiar with Celsius (take Celsius temperature, multiply by 2, and add 30=rough Fahrenheit temperature). Yes, this is not exact but it is not necessary.

Any ideas for the other two conversions?

When water freezes, it's zero degrees, if it boils it's 100 degrees. No need for converting anything into something else.
If it's +30, it's a nice summer day, if it's -20 it a freezing winter day.

Celsius: 0 = freezing, 10+ = 50sF, 20+ = 70sF, 30+ = you're not in Austria any more

Km to miles: x5/8

Euros to $: Check the newspapers and www.xe.com/ucc/

But if you're moving to live there, it shouldn't take long before you internalise the "feel" of local measures.

Hi B

Celsius temps.
0 freezing
5 very cold
10 cold
15 chilly
20 nice
21 warm
25 very warm
30 hot

100 km = 60 miles

Since you will be living in Austria, it won;t matter what the conversion rate for E to USD will be. Prices are what they are. (1E = $1.4 today. It will change)

100 gm is approx 1/4 lb.

1 Litre is approx 1 quart

1 bottle of Austrian Gruener Veltliner wine is much better than a similarly priced white wine from CA.

Enjoy your sojourn.

One Kilogram (1000 grams) = 2.2 pounds

500 grams, therefore, = 1.1 pounds

250 grams = a little more than 1/2 pound

125 grams = about 1/4 pound as Ira has indicated

If you can remember that a kilo is a little more than 2 pounds and that 500 grams is a little more than 1 pound, that should help

And as to distance: one Meter is a little more than 39 inches

and a kilometer is 0.6 of a mile, so 100 kilometers would be 60 miles

One "Pfund" equals 500 grams.
One "Deka" (dag) equals 10 grams.

The £ sign is no longer used on price tags. (EU...)
However, the expressions Pfund and Deka are used very frequently.
Don't be confused, if someone equals one pound with 500g, because since the empire went metric that was the definition for a pound.
