christmas markets in Germany in November?
I keep hearing all these lovely things about christmas markets. Will they be open yet around the end of november (28th of november-30th of November). If so, which are the most worthwile to see? I will be along the mosel and rhine and will be staying in st.goar for two nights. Also are these markets better to see during the day or night? Is there snow this time of year in Germany? Do you need to wear boots (like what I would wear to a local ski resort) or would I be okay in sneakers?

Any other suggestions for that general area appreciated

Yes, a good bunch of them open on the 28th. In Frankfurt we have no snow and it isn't all together that cold at the moment. You'll be fine in sneakers or hiking boots... it's been raining a lot lately so maybe something waterproof. As for those that are worthwhile, that's a bit subjective. Most of the markets can be seen and enjoyed in an hour or so, so you could easily go to several smaller markets during a day/night. The lights at night are something to see at the market and that is my favorite time to go. Do a search on here for the web site or maybe someone will post it for you...it's the christmas market site and will give you opening times for markets all over germany.

This page lists markets along the Rhine and further afield (in German, but the dates should be transparent.)

http://www.weihnachtsmarkt.weihnachten-info.de/

Oberwesel and its Christmas market are just a few km south of St. Goar. Haven't been to these particular ones myself.

With a few search words you should be able to find some good threads on this subject as it has been discussed recently.

We have done the markets many times. They are laid back and fun to go to.

Expect snow and you will be okay as you never know if you will be hit. We were in Heidelberg in 1998 and the snowflakes coming down in early December were enormous! It made for a fun night at the Christmas market.

I am sure the area you will be in will have some, but they may be small and open only in the evening and close early. Best time to go is at night for the lights and the festive atmosphere.

Go to the web site recommended above and check them out.

Ya gotta like Gluwein!
