Castles.

We will be travelling in Ireland in July and could use a little advice. On my last trip to Ireland, we stopped at Bunratty Castle for their traditional dinner and show. I was disappointed in the quality of the food, and it was overcrowded. The entertainment was just "OK". Can any of you recommed a castle with better quality traditional entertainment (with or without dinner) that may be more enjoyable? We will be travelling from Galway, south along the coast and up to Dublin. One of our tourist books mentions Dunguaire Castle in Galway -- Has anyone been there that could describe it a bit and would you recommend it? Thanks for your help once again!!!

All of the medieval feast things in Ireland are pretty much the same. But it's what you make of it. We went and had a great time. Extremely touristy, yes, but how can you not have a good time when the wine and mead are flowing and you get to eat with your fingers?

I'm curious why you want to go to another castle and pay that much money when your other experience was a bust.

There are so many good restaurants in Ireland, and pubs and folk clubs with great music. Do a little exploring.

I've heard people suggest that Bunratty is probably the best of the Irish banquets and Dunguaire is probably third. I agree, it's what you make of it.

Rick Steves suggested that if you want a great castle banquet, visit Ruthin in Wales.

Bill

Thanks Kathryn & Bill for your advice; I am travelling this time with my husband and several cousins, none of whom have been before. They are interested in the castle feasts, and I will happily tag along. When I went to Bunratty in 1989 I was with my two sons who were 13 and 9 and we did have a good time, but I just thought I'd check to see if one of the other castles might be better this time around. Thanks again for your thoughts.
Mary Jane
