Car Hire Germany
I have hired reserved a Group C car from Avis car rental in Germany and have been told this is likely to be a VW Golf. I hope this is the 1.6 or the TDI unit but am worried it might be the 1.4. Has anyone hired a Golf from them and if so what did they get? Or, are any of their other Group C cars more powerful?

Have you looked into gemut.com? They get great deals on rentals in Germany. They are a consolidator and sometimes go thru Autoeurope.com. I just book a car with them in Switzerland and got a great price.
I would recommend checking out Gemut, Autoeurope, and Avis and see which one gives the best price. They are all reputable.

When you check out AutoEurope also check out Kemwel.com, Autoeurope's sister company. In some instances you can get a wider variety of vehicle choices from the latter than you do with Autoeurope at the same locations.

As Ira says the actual vehicle can be any similar make, from just about any manufacturer. I rent the same class vehicle every trip I make and what I actually get has ranged from VW, Opel, Skoda or Renault, to Kia or Toyota.
When you get to the rental car desk you can ask them what specific cars they have in the lot, but your choices will be limited to their inventory.
