car factory tour near Berlin?
Although my preference would be to spend a day in Potsdam, I think my 16 year-old-son would appreciate a tour of a car factory much more when we are in Berlin next week! Can anyone recommend a tour that would be a reasonable day trip from Berlin? The make of car doesn't matter, although he'd probably like to see any sports car.

There's also the VW factory in Dresden - the "transparent" factory

a little far for a day trip just for the factory tho.

The Dresden factory may be much better - i've heard about the famous transparent factory and it's very unique but i'm hazy on the details - if Ingo is around she could tell you much more - but i think it's right in town and Dresden is but a few hours on a train and it's such a great town - strongly consider it for both a factory tour and a fabulous town.

Ingo is not a "she", but a "he"!!!
Seriously - the Wolfsburg facility of Volkswagen may be a lot of fun, too. They have erected a whole theme park by the name of Autostadt with numerous attractions and museums dealing with every brand from the Volkswagen Group (including Bentley, Lamborghini, Audi etc.). I haven't been yet, but I have not heard from a single person who did not enjoy it.
The Dresden plant is stunning, too (just seen it from the outside), but they make only one model there (the luxury model by the name of Phaeton), which, unfortunately but predictably, does not sell well at all.

Thanks for the correction, hsv ;-)
Honestly, if the manufacturing of the car doesn't matter and the focus is on sports cars, then Dresden's Transparent Manufacture would be boring for your son.

Herr Ingo - sorry for the mistake - just though Ingo was a female name for some reason. Anyway it sounds like the Wolfsburg factory tour is the one to head for:

And it seems Wolfsburg is only one hour from Berlin by train (about 30 euros each way, however) - schedules at www.bahn.de
