Can you visit just the outside of Windsor castle?
I enjoy wandering around the outside, gardens, courtyards, etc. of places like Windsor Castle but tend to get bored touring through rooms. Is it possible to see much of the grounds/architecture of Windsor without buying a ticket to go inside? For example at some castles and chateaux in Europe I have been able to walk around without buying a ticket, the ticket would only be necessary to go inside, but at others you must have a tickets to get anywhere near it. Can someone tell me what the situation is like at Windsor? In other words, is it worth going there if I don't want to spend hours touring inside rooms?

Sara

I apologise if this gets posted twice, the first time I tried was timed out. However the last time I was in Windsor I asked the local tourist office if it was possible to just go into the grounds and they told me that since the renovations following the fire it was no longer possible. Windsor castle is high over the town so it can be seen from the streets from just about every angle.

All you can see from outside are the outer walls. The courtyards, St Georges Chapel, guard change, terraces over the river are all inside the Castle Walls and require a ticket

(this is not a change from before the fire. You used to buy tickets just inside the castle walls and now you buy them outside - but you even then could not to wander through the castle precincts w/o a ticket)

If you go on a Sunday, you will be admitted to St George's Chapel free of charge (collection taken) to attend services there. The times are 10.45am (Mattins), 11.45am (Holy Communion) and 5.15pm (Evensong). You have a chance for a quick view of inside the walls, as well as the interior of the chapel, though worshippers aren't encouraged to linger after the service (the chapel is closed to general visitors that day).
