Frequent flyer miles dictate that we fly to Zurich instead of Rome directly so...
I have looked at Ryanair and Easyjet to fly from Zurich to Rome. I can get from Milan to Rome-for 5.99E!!-but not Zurich.
Is that my best option?
Would a train from Zurich to Milan be a good idea?
Thanks for any input!

No wonder, since neither of these airlines flies to Zürich
>Is that my best option?
if Air Berlin has no available flights, look at Easyjet from Basel to Rome.

Depends on the time you have. It's about four hours to Milan, plus one hour to Malpensa (less to Linate). A night train directly to Rome might be also an alternative.

What dates are you looking at?
I took the night train from Arth-Goldau to Rome two years ago. The train left Arth-Goldau at midnight. It would leave earlier from Zürich.
The sleeping cabins were clean, comfortable and modern. The only problem was the brakes and the stops during the night, when the workers would be yelling at each other outside of the train.
We were supposed to arrive around 10ish the next morning but got there after 11.
Look at SWISS, which is more expensive than budget planes but sometimes they have good deals.
Basel is a possibility. Milan too. I've done neither so can't advise.

We thought about the night train to Rome but nixed it since we are flying at night from Atlanta to Zurich-no sleep then. Add a 9 hour(or whatever it is!) night train trip and I won't be able to function for days!
I didn't think that would be a good way to start our trip.
I will look at Basel to Rome-thanks!

Maybe. Or maybe exactly due to the lack of sleep before you will be able to sleep on the train...

Easyjet quotes Basel-Rome Ciampino at CHF 66 or Euro 43 per adult.
The flight leaves at 11:30, so the check-in counter will be open from 09:30 to 11:00.
There is a direct train leaving Zurich airport at 09:04 which arrives at Basel at 10:18. Cost one way is CHF 34.
The bus journey from Basel rail station to Basel airport will take 15 Minutes (CHF about 4). A taxi will take you there in 10 Minutes (CHF 50).
Hope this helps
Enjoy your trip

Much easier: buy a ticket from Zürich airport to Basel airport. No need to buy separate tickets for train and bus.

Quite right. Total cost is CHF 37.80 Zurich Airport to Basel airport (as a season ticket holder I tend to forget this possibility!).
italybound07:
Another hint: If you are travelling on easyJet without checked luggage, you can check in on-line up to 60 days in advance. You can proceed directly to the security control at the airport without standing in line af the check-in counter. This means you get an extra 90 minutes to transfer.
Enjoy your trip.
