When I have to call overseas, I use the 101-6868 dialing code (www.pt-1.com/English_Site.html) It only costs 7.9 cents a minute to the UK (same rate applies to Canada.)
My call to confirm our cottage in September was only 57 cents.

Sounds like you are paying the old AT&T standard residential rates. Do you have a discount long distance plan with anybody?
If you google 'long distance rate comparison' you will come up with numerous web sites that will compare the many companies offering plans. Depending on your calling pattern you can
My long distance carrier is Total Call USA http://www.totalcallusa.com/longdistance/residential/
they have plans for as little as $0.06/min to Canada, with no dial around required (just direct dial from my home phone)

IN Massachusetts, Verizon offers a land line plan for $70/mo including all taxes--actual price is lower--that includes unlimited long distance to all the US and Canada. Perhaps any place in the US that has Verizon service has the same?? But I am guessing that your query, being on the Europe board, indicates that you do not live in the US.

WHERE are you calling from? Makes a huge difference.
If from the States - try a 1010 number (different ones work better in different areas). I use 1010-987 but you can google "1010 numbers" and compare rates. I pay 5¢ or less a minute depending on the call.

Finexpert, why would one want to do business with your company in that you are not savy enough to read the rules that Fodor's has or you do not respect any other company's rules? Not someone I would want to do business with but nice try!!!
