Buy or Rent Car in Europe?
We're going to Europe for 17 days. In checking car rental prices we find that our cheapest deal is to "buy" a car for the 17 days and then return it to the seller (Kemwel) at trip's end . They also provides the insurance. Has anyone had experience with this deal? What are the pitfalls?

Never heard of that- I would be wary! Why don't you check out the following website--www.eurotrip.com. Click on Web Links on the left side of home page- then on the next screen click on the Auto category- then a list of different topics and links comes up- explore those. The booklet that Patty Campbell and her friend David publish was very very helpful for us; having a listing of who to buy and lease from this is reputable, etc. Also there are l5 travelboards in that forum!

Jerry; The "buy" you're talking about sounds like a lease. The contract is written as a purchase with a buy-back at the end off the lease period. I leased a car from Peugot a few years ago, and was completely satisfied. The car was brand new and the price included everything taxes, insurance, etc. The problem is that you have to pick up in France. There are some cities outside of France where you can pick up, but there is an additional charge of $50 to $250, depending on the distance from France. Minimum lease period is 17 days. Some of the rental companies offer these leases, but they are still from Peugot And Renault. We are leasing a car from Renault this time, but only because of the pick up points offered, each company is slightly different. You can get brochures with prices and pick up locations from Peugot at 1-800-572-9655 or Renault at 1-800-221-1052. Renault also has a website www.eurodrive.net Happy Motoring, Phil

Where did you find the booklet by Patty Campbell and friend David about the car rental issue? I need to rent a car big enough for 5 adults for 21 days this summer and I am overwhelmed by the prices I am seeing in Norway.Somewhere in this forum I saw a reference to a Hertz prepay special before March 31. How did you find out about that?

Lesley- Go into www.eurotrip.com- on homepage click on Web Links- then on next page click on the heading that has to do with auto rental (forget the exact title) then a list comes up. You should see Patty Campbell's book in that list. I ordered it and believe me it is a bible! If you have any problems e mail me and I will get you her address.
