Bus or train from Split

We are interested in visiting Dubrovnik and Split as a part of our 3 week vacation in October. I have found inexpensive flights from London to Dubrovnik, and will either rent a car or take a bus to Mostar and then Split. We are having difficulty finding discount flights out of Split to anywhere except London (and we don't want to return to London). I am wondering if there is a bus or train that would take us north from Split and if so where does it go to?

It would help if you tell us where you want to go from Split.

Good question from LittleVicky. The most obvious place to go to is Zagreb, which you can get to from Split by train or bus. If you look at www.harefares.com, you can check a number of different airports in Croatia from which you can fly to, say, Rome.

We were looking at Milan or Geneva but from what we can see Easyjet doesn't fly after the end of August. Does this mean that the flights aren't being shown or that they don't fly out of Split after the end of August?
LittleVicky, we are starting our trip planning by finding transportation in and out of Croatia, we have been to Rome, Florence and Venice as well as parts of central Europe on previous trips and so are looking at some places to combine with a week in Croatia. Number one priority is easy access with trains or discount airlines such as Easyjet or Ryanair.

There are trains from Split to Zagreb, but there is no railway along the coast. You can easily get to Milano by taking an overnight ferry from Split to Ancona, then a train.
