Burgundy & Alsace Cheese

Let's talk cheese. My husband and I are literally planning a trip around wine and cheese In Burgundy, we will based out of Dijon for 3 days. Then 2 days in Alsace (route de vin) and a day in Strasbourg. Have you found any special cheese shops or a farm/dairy that sells direct? In Italy, we stumbled on pecorino w/truffles on a farm/vineyard and got HOOKED. Would love to find more yummy stuff in France.

Here's the website of a farm near Arnay-le-Duc I had hoped to visit on my recent trip to Burgundy but didn't find the time. It's just to the west of Beaune. Click on "Plan d'acces" for a map.

I enjoyed the Epoisses in Burgundy. It can be found all over.

Bon appetit!

Bernard Antony, in Vieux Ferrette, is one of the most renowned affineurs de fromages in the country. (The butter is super, too.) Purchase cheese at the shop or arrange for a cheese-centric dinner in the dining room.

Bernard Antony

Eleveur de fromages

5 Rue de la Montagne

Coco from Dijon ( cocofromdijon ) probably has a lot of information in the Dijon region. Plus, she has a very nice apartment which would be nice and cozy for munching your purchases.

Hi SH,

The Munster cheese in Alsace is completely unlike anything I have ever had in the US. Much better, too.

Try to have a tarte flambée (Flammekueche), while you are there.

You didn't mention mustard but there is a great mustard shop in downtown Dijon. We bought a few quarts of Grey Poupon and a small ceramic bowl for the table. The real thing in Dijon is a bit spicier than the Kraft Foods version from Glenview, IL which is "based on the original Dijon, France recipe."

Besides Dijon you will find cheese shops with good selections in Nuits-St.-Georges and Beaune. For wine, stop where you see the "degustation" signs - taste and buy.

For more on Bernard Antony, see the July 7, 2007, entry on
www.balehoo.com.

("Pronounced “Bahl-EE-hoo” the name is a play on “Bale” - the French name for Basel - and the name of the popular web portal, yahoo!&quot

And in December 2002, Food & Wine had a feature article on M Antony, cheese making, and affinage--

I checked out all the links and I am definitely going to visit the Anthonys! I have to figure out how to do the wine and cheese dinner. I think I would cry with joy! I loved the farm link. I don't read or speak French--thank goodness most websites follow the same set up logic! I printed off the map and their hours. Could be fun. Thanks for all the help!

Hi, Since you'll be staying in Dijon, you MUST go and visit Gaugry factory in the south just before Gevrey Chambertin.
I went there with Susanna and her DH and it was a great experience. I'm not sure they do tastings all the time but you may want to see what it looks like with Susanna's comments :

They also have a stand at the covered food market in Dijon.
Near the market, a few shops :
Au Gars Normand, rue Odebert
Chalet Comtois, 28 rue Musette
Crèmerie Porcheret, 18 rue Bannelier

Bon appétit!
