bringing an old iphone to France

So I have an unused iPhone (original version).
I plan to be in France for 3 weeks this summer.
I want to get phone, text and data while there , mainly for local connections, bus, restaurants, directions, what's nearby, etc (I would rather not know what calamities have befallen Louisiana while I am away).

So what options do I have?

Orange ? Apple? local phone store.?

Can I set up getting a temp number before I leave ???

All help gratefully appreciated.

Bernard

I'm not sure what the best system is for a local chip, but I have some app suggestions (and how to connect to the Paris wifi) that might help: http://www.aussieinfrance.com/2011/1...aris-and-wifi/

Thanks for the reply - trying to ocme up to speed on "unlocking". I'm not sure if it is unlocked. Perhaps I need to get some software to unlock the phone.
It previously had an AT&T contract. That contract and service has since been moved to a newer 3GS iphone.
Been unused for the last year ... but thought I might be able to put it use while in France for a few weeks.

I read that just recently AT&T began unlocking out-of-contract Iphones. Here is 1 person's experience:

thanks for response

per some article I just read .....
"AT&T's out-of-contract policy is less favorable, but it could still come in handy for users who've hung onto their older iPhones and don't want to pay a fortune for service abroad."

Guess I'm gonna visit my local store and see what I can do to get my old iphone unlocked ....

then i need to find a deal for France

thanks for response
