Hi Taggie : yes, of course you're right, there were funny & heartwarming bits too. I probably take the sad parts more to heart though as I was living in Sheffield during the miners' strike, and tend to remember most the parts of the film that make me cry.

Big Alan Rickman fan here...
Sense & Sensibility

Hugh Grant is not so very "nice" nor "charming" in "An Awfully Big Adventure"... a few years back with Rickman.

<i>Does Colin fill the tabloids in the UK? I never read anything about his personal life, does he have a past, or a family? Inquiring minds want to know.</i>

Elaine,

Firth is married to a beautiful Italian and they have two little boys. He was previously in a relationship with Meg Tilly with whom he has another son, now about 14.

He was prime tabloid fodder for several years after P&amp;P but it cooled down after he got married. He doesn't like all the attention and tries to discourage it.

There are lots of websites devoted to him -- his fans are a passionate bunch. There's a list of them at http://www.grin.net/~meluchie/webring.html (no, it's not my site!).

If you'd like to see him in something else, try to find My Life So Far, a charming little movie. He was also in Shakespeare in Love, as the man Gwyneth Paltrow was forced to marry.

On the weekend I stumbled across a review of &quot;The Edge of Reason&quot;. Megan Gressor in The Sydney Morning Herald puts it cruelly, but well:

&quot;Colin Firth (who, it has to be said, isn't ageing particularly well) comes across less as Byronic hero and more as someone tormented by piles, his mouth set in a cat's-bum rictus of disapproval at our heroine's antics.&quot;

Full review at http://smh.com.au/articles/2004/11/0...547378860.html

Oh, Neal, &quot;cats-bum rictus&quot; !! I love that, how descriptive. I am going to be using that phrase all the time now, I can't wait.

How many times people have looked at me that way and now I can picture a cat's bum! How freeing!

...I have to get in on this gossip-fest
with my few pathetic bits of info!

l. If you liked Cold Comfort Farm read
the book - it's a hoot!
2. Hugh re Julia's mouth - something
like &quot;her mouth is so big that when
I kissed her there was an echo.&quot;
3. Didn't Peter Firth die of a heart
attack some years ago?
4. I think the 'best' Colin film is
The Advocate - also known as The
Year of the Pig. Very funny - and
he stretches his acting from X to Z!
5. Alan Rickman is truly, madly, deeply
wonderful.............

I see 'the Edge of Reason' last night - not vg but stil v. enjoyable. They got round the &quot;colin Firth&quot; bit by, er, leaving it out.

Judyrem Nov 8th, 2004 05:04 AM

Caroline, I read that they were going to release it earlier here...Nov 12 because of the good buzz from sneak previews.

Last night's UK premiere pictures for the Bridget Jones' obsessed:

My oh my, Hugh Grant just gets better as he gets older (unlike Colin Firth it seems)...

flygirl Nov 10th, 2004 02:06 AM

poor Colin! I still adore him.

we're definitely going to see this while we are there...

&quot;Hugh Grant on &quot;Inside the Actors Studio.&quot; I've been reasonably amused by a handful of Hugh Grant's movie appearances. But, IMHO, his best performance by far has been this hilarious interview on &quot;Inside the Actors Studio.&quot; As ever, the show's host James Lipton tries to be admiring and solemn; Hugh Grant will have none of it. He admits that he's a lousy actor who loves applause; he teases Lipton and flirts with the audience. The whole Grant package glows: the floppy-haired sheepishness semi-disguising the boastful rogue beneath; the bashful stuttering that contrasts with the whopping vanity. Grant manages to dodge Lipton's obsequiousness for a half hour; then Lipton's tongue finally does manage to snake its way up Grant's ass. But what a funny first half-hour it was. Bravo; Sunday, November 14 at 6 a.m. and noon.&quot;

I really liked Colin in &quot;Pride and Prejudice&quot; and a few other things, but never could quite get over him playing the pr--k (Simon Westward) in &quot;Circle of Friends.&quot;

&quot;What a Girl Wants&quot; with Colin was kind of lame -- American teen finds out that her father is a British politician and she runs away to meet him. There was one scene I got a kick out of, though. The daughter asks him what kind of music he liked in the '70s. Before he can answer, she mutters under her breath, &quot;Please don't say The Bee Gees, please don't say The Bee Gees.&quot; (His answer is Little Feat.)

Your heart throb is retiring, ladies.

If you have seen, &quot;Maurice&quot; not a comedy,
you can see Hugh Grant without his mannerisms, shyness. A wonderful performance.

Dr_DoGood Nov 11th, 2004 02:35 PM

FYI Beban Kidron (director) has let it slip that Bridget Jones interviewing Colin Firth WAS filmed and will be included as an extra with the DVD release - however it was felt that it interfered with the &quot;suspension in disbelief&quot; that all drama requires so was chopped frm the theatrical release.

Scarlett Nov 11th, 2004 03:28 PM

We were going to see this film tomorrow (thats November 12th ) but after reading the New York Times review, I might not.
Has anyone actually seen this one?
I did like the first, not as much the second. This one sounds awful :(

taggie Nov 11th, 2004 03:38 PM

Scarlett - are there 3 of them? I thought only 2...

Re: Hughie the cutie retiring... He's been threatening this for a while... since the first Bridget - but then he did About a Boy... then he threatened retirement some more - but did Love Actually. He's also been working on a script for ages. He is getting increasingly grumpy, and being with Jemima doesn't seem to help! But if he marries her he certainly won't have to work...

Grasshopper Nov 11th, 2004 03:41 PM

This one is number two. Based on your other movie feedback, I doubt this will be up to your level of sophistication, Scarlett.

Scarlett Nov 11th, 2004 03:41 PM

LOL taggie, this is the second one :)
I think I saw the first one twice and didn't like it as much LOL
I did see Alfie today though.
While I did not love that movie either, I would say that sitting in a darkened theater and looking at Jude Law for 2 hours is not Punishment :D

taggie Nov 11th, 2004 03:49 PM

Jude Law... sigh...
That NYT review was really biting! Will still go to see it, though... if just for the eye candy (and I'm not talking about Renee's posterior, which gets mentioned a lot in that review).
