My husband just walked off the plane from spending a week in the UK and he said Hugh Grant is throwing MAJOR temper tantrums about how dreadful this movie is. So all this silly lusting after movie people is for nothing....

taggie Nov 11th, 2004 05:57 PM

OK dln... I've heard about the tantrums. I've heard about this movie being bad. But how does that make "lusting after" movie people silly and for nothing? Please explain.

Scarlett Nov 11th, 2004 05:58 PM

LOL, wait until Renee sees that all that fattening up was for nothing. I mean, Robert DeNiro did it for Raging Bull but at least he won an Oscar, right?

Neil_Oz Nov 12th, 2004 12:34 AM

Ladies, there's a review at http://www.nytimes.com/2004/11/12/mo...f=login&th , if you're interested.

caroline_edinburgh Nov 12th, 2004 01:51 AM

Scarlett: Yes, as I said above (albeit in a v. rushed, semi-literate posting !), I saw it last Sunday. I'd say it's not vg *but* my hubby & I still enjoyed it. It's basically just the relationships between Bridget, Mark & Daniel including the trip to Thailand. No Colin Firth interview, no Princess Diana. As a bit of silly froth to pass an enjoyable evening I'd recommend it. Good soundtrack.

I have not seen the movie yet, but from what I can tell, I like her "Bridget" look a lot better than her goth look! 145 pounds on 5'5 is a bit much, but, she looks very unhealthy in the recent pictures I've seen - 100 pounds on 5'5 is a drastic difference - she lost almost a third of her weight.

caroline_edinburgh Nov 12th, 2004 03:30 AM

flygirl: I agree. In fact I thought it was quite strange that in the film, Renee's face looked a little chubbhy, she had big boobs, but the rest of her looked a completely normal size for anyone except a film star. I remember seeing a photo of her after she lost the weight last time & the bones were sticking out of her feet (a look I've since noticed on Saraj Jessica Parker) - yeurgh !

And isn't the point about Bridget that she obsesses over her weight but is in fact a perfectly normal size, give or take 2lb or so ?

flygirl Nov 12th, 2004 04:18 AM

Caroline - I seem to remember she was less than 10 stone, I don't remember her height though, in the book? unless you're 5'2 or so, what's wrong with 9 stone, right?

regardless of the awful reviews, I look forward to seeing Colin and Hugh on the big screen, for myself! plus it's a treat to see films in London - the adverts and trailers are so much more interesting than what we have here.

Scarlett Nov 12th, 2004 05:33 AM

Hi caroline, sorry I missed your posting, I have to admit, this is so long, I skipped some~
The review made it sound SO bad, perhaps we will give it a try anyway..I am curious how long it takes to lose that much weight and is it healthy?
Grasshoppper- you will never get over my not liking Under The Tuscan Sun, will you ? LOL

Off today to see Stage Beauty, just found out it is playing at the beaches. Anyone see it? sounds good :)

Grasshopper Nov 12th, 2004 05:40 AM

Oh la! I had completely forgotten that. No, I was referring to your preference for Art films.

Scarlett Nov 12th, 2004 05:43 AM

Grasshoppper, sigh, Art House Films, something that I do not see enough of anymore.
If you knew me, you would know that we are a Movie going family, if it is in anyway entertaining, we will probably see it.
(according the the New York Times review, this Bridget is not so entertaining, but I might give it a chance, based on some opinions here)

Grasshopper Nov 12th, 2004 05:45 AM

Well I will see it today. I'll let you know what I think.

flygirl Nov 12th, 2004 05:51 AM

Grasshopper! Tell us how it is, but don't be a spoiler now! ;)

Scarlett Nov 12th, 2004 05:58 AM

Grasshopper, be brutal, is her butt reeeally that big? LOL
Enjoy.

Tallulah Nov 12th, 2004 06:04 AM

Funny, I'd actually forgotten this until now but I (almost literally) bumped into Colin Firth in Marks & Spencers in Chiswick (West London, where he lives) about 18 months ago.

I followed him round the shop, delighting as he picked up ready-meals for one. At this point I was unaware that he was married and so indulged in some wonderful fantasising that he was going to see me and fall head over heels in love with me at first sight. I was overlooking the fact that I was having a bad hair/face/body day clearly.

I even followed him halfway down the road before I remembered that there are such things as injunctions and court orders, which get thrown at you for indulging in precisely that kind of behaviour!

Sigh...

Grasshopper Nov 12th, 2004 06:04 AM

I'm sorry Scarlett, that's even a bit snippy and bitchy for you! Certainly you are a bigger person than that? Besides, I'm sure her butt is smaller than mine so I won't complain. We can't all be as perfect as we'd like. Oh well.

Grasshopper Nov 12th, 2004 06:06 AM

Yikes! Tallulah! Thanks for that! Very funny. :-)

Scarlett Nov 12th, 2004 06:10 AM

Good Lord! what in the world are you talking about Grasshopper??
The reviews ( if you read them) go on and on about the size of her butt! Even another poster has mentioned it.

That NYT review was really biting! Will still go to see it, though... if just for the eye candy (and I'm not talking about Renee's posterior, which gets mentioned a lot in that review).:...

You seem to have issues that are not related in any way to this thread.

cigalechanta Nov 12th, 2004 07:53 AM

Can I butt in here, ladies!!!

taggie Nov 12th, 2004 09:59 AM

LOL Mimi!!! :)

One local review says the movie is OK but there is better chemistry between Hugh and Colin than between either of them and Renee!! Also says they've made Bridget look awful with bad hair and skin and actual cellulite this time, causing one to wonder what the men see in her.
I wonder why they went with this new director, whose main work thus far has been documentaries. Seems an odd choice for a comedy - sounds like she went too broad with Bridge's physical stuff and made her a less likely everywoman.
Oh well, will still go - maybe just not rent over and over....
