Border Crossing
Are there long delays in border crossings into & out of Poland and Czech Republic? (We will be driving a retal car from Hertz - they will allow us to in a certain car).We are trying to drive between Krakow & Munich in one full day. Is that possible? We will be border crossing into Czech Republic, Austria & Germany. Any advise will help. Thank you.

I've not been to Poland, and to the Czech Republic only by train (there were no delays to speak of). According to www.viamichelin.com, your drive is over 500 miles and about 10 hours; I think you would do well to break it up with a day in Vienna, which is more or less in the middle.

Last year we crossed from the Czech Republic into Austria in a car we had rented in the Czech Republic. The Austrian border guards made us stop and took our rental papers and our passports. They were very courteous but it was a little unsettling. They kept them for about 5 minutes ( took them into a little office---I don't know what they were doing with them) and then returned them and we were on our way.

I have no idea if this normal or not. Assume it had something to do with crossing from a non-EU country into an EU country. In any case, it was not really a great delay at all. This was at a small border crossing and there were not many other cars. Obviously, if there had been a lot of cars it could have been more of a delay.
All in all, assuming your rental papers are okay, I don't think you should have any problem.

PS--too bad you can't spend some time in the Czech Republic---we really enjoyed it. Have a great time.

As you will be crossing from an EU country to a non-EU country, there will be normal border controls. On a busy day in summer this can take up to 2 hours. It all depends on the day, the time and the border crossing. Last time we went to Prague by car it took us 2 hours to cross the border to the Czech Republic (Saturday afternoon in August, road from Dresden to Prague) and 30 minutes coming back to Germany (Wednesday morning Cheb to Hof) Best is to ask the ADAC (German auto club) in Munich. They should have the latest information on this.
