some mistakes. Bookmarking, bumping, and advertising . Sorry whatever all of these mean sorry. Will try for it to not happen again.

Bookmarking - adding a comment so you can store the web address of the posting (personally I use use right mouse button on the link)
Bumping - add a comment so that the posting goes to the top of the forum
Advertising - probably means advertising

Advertising is not allowed here.
"Bookmarking" is stupid and inconsiderate. The proper way to do it is to click on the title of the thread one wants to save - which will show the thread ID on your brower's location window - and add that URL to your own browser. One shouldn't post a basically empty message on the board for personal convenience.
Bumping is fair game by the original poster, or whoever wants to bump the thread back to the top of the forum. Just don't abuse it - like bumping it up every few hours. Also makes little sense to bump a really old post unless there's some really unique information not discussed elsewhere or since.

I don't think bookmarking is inconsiderate. The vast majority of all these threads disappear into oblivion and I don't see the problem with bookmarking so I can easily retrieve the info when I need it months later.
I don't think of Fodors as this well-oiled machine that physicians need quick, easy, and unmediated access to before performing surgury. It's a travel chat board with a lot of fluff and bantering and if there are some additional posts that say "bookmarking," then it just underscores the value of the thread.
If people can retrieve a thread that they would have otherwise forgotten or couldn't find, it's well worth the extra post. It would be nice if the board could be re-designed to make this unnecessary, but until then, I'll continue bookmarking.

On the Mac you can add the thread to the bookmarks by pressing the Control button and clicking on the post's title in the left column. You then will be able to add the link to your bookmarks. To make sure that the bookmark is clear, you may need to rename it.

I was going to ask if there was a way to retrieve a trip report, in it's entirety, without all the other comments and posts.
I guess not.
Hence, bookmarking. Which I never really thought about until this thread.
SO I went to the report I wanted to refer to later, right clicked on the title and was offered the option of putting it in my favorites, where it now resides.
What I don't understand is how that could be inconsiderate.
I obviously am missing something here.
Are there multiple ways to do this?
Better ways?
Thanks, in advance, for any insight.

I standby 100% of what I wrote.
You can retrieve all the threads you want as I described - on your own browser's bookmark folder. If you want to leave a mark on a thread, at least write something semi-meaningful to others, rather than just post "bookmarking".
In the years, I have opened a lot of threads that have come back up to the top which I had previously posted - with my answers, questions or comments - only to find the content of the new post to be:
"bookmarking"
If that's not inconsideration, I don't know what is.

iluvitaly - You're doing the correct way, just as I've described. What I have problem is people replying to a thread, only to add the world "bookmarking" or whatever, in order to get it easier next time for that particular poster.
If there's 100 registered people doing this on this thread, there will be 110 replies to this thread already.
But you're doing it exactly the way one should.

Bookmarkimg or topping just to bookmark really isn't rude - since those who do it usually don't realize they are being inconsiderate.
BUT if they continue bookmarking after learning how to add to their favorites/bookmarks - then I think we can safely call them rude.
This forum is far too busy to have every Tom, Dick, Harry and Eloise bookmark threads just so they can find them more easily. That simply drives more current threads farther down the list.

When you don't have your laptop with you, you can log-on to Fodors while traveling and find relevant threads quickly under your screen name -- this really helped me out in Spain as I was trying to jot down addresses without keeping my group waiting too long.
This seems quite sensible since this is a travel site -- we might want to easily access info while we're on the road. Even when I take my laptop, I don't lug it around with me all the time but I can still look something up within minutes at an internet cafe or on my blackberry through my screen name if I realize I've stumbled into a neighborhood with really good "blank".
So, I'd rather have loose threads organized under my screenname and keep it off my computer -- call it selfish but this seems practical to me. Why is it such a burden for a thread to go to the top? I imagine if one person "bookmarking" finds the info relevant that means many other readers might as well.
How about taking it as a complimnent that people are continuing to find your questions and responses relevant? It takes 5 seconds to open a thread and close it. Again, I'd love it if the site were re-designed with features that would prevent annoying some of you -- since it's ironic that I'm bugging the very people who have helped me and who I feel grateful to...

Hamanchad - I don't think that you did any bookmarking. In one of your threads, there was some good advice, so other people were bookmarking for themselves. Instead of doing it in an unobtrusive way that no one else would have noticed (by adding it to their personal bookmarks as mentioned above), they simply typed "Bookmarking" so that they could easily come back to that thread.
Again, they were not accusing you of anything and it doesn't look like you did any bookmarking of your own.

Because this forum is very busy and every "bookmark" knocks another new thread off the first page. Most folks start threads because they really need help - and as soon as a thread drops off the top 50 it stands much less chance of being noticed/answered. So yes - it is selfish to keep topping threads simply so you can find it later when it is more convenient for you.
Now - if you had something relevant to add to the thread -- that would be a whole different kettle of fish. And you'd be able to find it later.

So people should make superfluous comments to disguise that they're bookmarking? That's fine, I can do that pretty easily, but isn't the net effect the same -- pushing other posts down? At least with a bookmark, you don't bother to read anything more.
How about when people say thanks -- do people not mind reading that even though it's not a substantive addition to the thread? It seems that many people find it irritating when posters don't bother to return and say thank you. Do the same people who dislike bookmarking dislike thank you posts? (not trying to be antagonistic, these are genuine questions)

fkkwan- didn't you say that bookmarking is inconsiderate? You have done it yourself:

Ladies and gents, found this tidbit on the "Lufthansa finally reimbursed me" thread. Don't be so quick to call someone rude and considerate when you do it yourself. Hmmmm
