Don't know if it is a "best story", but I met my late husband while living in England. He was American also and we worked alongside each other. Fell in love and eloped to Edinburgh, honeymooning in Scotland. We had five more years together in England before returning to the States (and other countries) and I have so very many wonderful memories of that country.

I went to Ireland for the first time when I was 16. While at a dance there I met a local boy (small town) and fell in "16 year old love". So, for the next week I would hope he would see me at the different dances (that's what you did back in the early 70's there).
And, each time he would and we had a great time together. Then, back to California. I went back to Ireland the next summer (my parents are both from there) and the first dance I went to was in Castlerea, Co. Roscommon,(the next town over from his) their dance hall was huge and had an upper balcony. I, of course, was looking for John, the boy I'd met the year before.
But, I did not see him. Another fellow asked me to dance and at some point I looked up and there in the crowd of lads was John-looking at me one second and then I could see him leaving the balcony to be with me and my then 17 year old beating heart....We had such fun that trip too-all 2 weeks of it.
I never saw him again. He came to New York a few years later and wrote but I was pretty involved with a guy who would later become my first husband. And, New York was just not in the cards for me. I am going to that town this trip-in 2 weeks-my mom lives there now.
I am debating whether to see if he works in the meat market owned by his family-he prob. runs it now. That would be just to say hi, mind you.
Oh, those were fun times!
Patti

I was living in Germany and dating a German lady at the time. We had a company outing (a Rhein cruise). My girlfriend's daughter became ill and she did not want to leave her with her mother so she canceled. I went with some of my friends and we were have a good time when I went to get a beer and this very nice looking young lady at the next table asked me if I would get her one also. I said OK but only if she would dance with me. Well we left the cruise for a couple of hours in Rudesheim with our friends and went to a resturante to have some wine. We got back on the boad and returned to Wiesbaden where the cruise completed. I drove her home and we started dating. Eight months later we got married and spent our honeymoon in Bertschgarten. I met my second wife on a commuter train here in Los Angeles. Now I fly more often than take the train or a ship. Whats next???
Cheers
Art
Last summer I fell in love with France and Italy. This spring I fell in love with Scotland. I fell in love with many of the people that I met, the culture and people I observed from a distance. I fell in love with the countryside. I fell in love with the cities. I fell in love with Paris, Burgundy, Provence, Alsace, and then Sienna, the Tuscan countryside and all the little towns, and towns outside like Urbino, Verona and Lake Como. I renewed an old love affair with Venice which was rekindled instantaneously. Every street, alley, canal, store front, cathedral, restaurant, vendor, cafe, gallery/museuem set the old flame in motion. If you love to travel, you feel it every day. It starts with a sensation in the heart and expands from there.

...I was in my mid-twenties and backpacking alone in Europe. In Paris I met a beautiful girl from Rio de Janeiro also travelling alone. I spent 5 days in Paris and spent each day with her, walking along the Seine, exploring the museums and dining out. She was staying with some a friend's family, and I was also staying with a friend's family. Each morning we picked an agreed upon place to meet in Paris (usually Notre Dame) and we would then spend the entire day together, and evening. Then we would go our separate ways to our host family. On our last day, we decided to meet at the metro in Versailles, but we unable to find each other. I had not gotten her address, phone number, e-mail or any contact information. I have never seen her again. I'm left with a first name, some pictures and beautiful memories. I'm back in Europe this summer, 4 years later.

Last year I went to Paris, and the people were so rude I wound up falling in love with myself---and I don't even like me! Can you believe it? All it takes is three or four days of attitude from smelly Parisians and voila, I love me!

Anyone ever fall in love in the Middle East?

seems our little german friend nina got over her aversion to US defense policies now that she has two little americans of her own to protect....
funny how that happens.
let's just hope she's paying taxes now, since she moved into a system she didn't spend a dime to create, the same one that protects her now, the same one she rallied against at oxford...

Michael (whoever you are). Since you don't know the rest of the story you come very ignorant and ill prepared. It so happens that I did not cheat on her. I informed her that I had met someone else long before I had done anything with that other person other than having a glass of wine. After seeing the way some people act and are so quick to judgment on this forum, its no wonder that we have wars all of the time.

There is a similar thread on another site; this was one of the better ones

I travelled in Europe last January/February, and had the time of my life. I also happened to meet the most amazing girl, and we have fallen in love since. If you haven't already guessed, I'm from Australia, she's Belgium.
I met her on the train from Brussles to Bruges (where she lives). I was travelling with a friend, and we all got on quite well. She gave us her phone number and told us to call her if we were staying the next night. There was a certain attraction to her, and although we didn't plan to stay that extra night, I managed to convince my mate to I called her, and we all went out and had a nice quiet night. We said our goodbyes, and I never expected to see her again. For some reason, I was sad about this, which is unusual for me to feel for someone I just met.
My mate and I travelled for another month, but he was leaving 3 days before me. I was keeping in touch with the girl in Bruges through email, and she invited me back to stay with her, for those three days! That was an opportunity I wasn't going to miss out on. The first night together was just amazing. We got on soooo well, we talked until 7am! We totally opened up to each other, and were saying things that we had never told others before. We spent the next day looking around Bruges and we continued to get on really well. That night, she kissed me and then it all happened. Not going into details here She was the first girl to ever appreciate me. I'm a nice guy, so it was frustrating earlier that girls never saw that. I left back to Australia after spending *the* most amazing 3 days with her. She fell in love with me while I was there, but didn't realise it until I sent her a boquet of roses a few days after I left. We exchanged big (at least 4000 words) emails everyday for the first month away from each other. Due to her uni commitments that has reduced a bit now A few weeks ago I fell in love with her too. We have told each other, and it is the BEST feeling ever! I'm going back to see her in September for a month (if I can get it off work) and then I'm moving to London in March, while she finishes her degree. We plan to travel around Australia together, and then the rest of the world I'm totally in love with her, and she with me. I never believed the saying that "there is someone out there for everyone", but now I do. It was fate we met, no doubt, and I'm thankful everyday that I took that train ride.
Hi Teller,
what do you think: Of course, I'm not paying any taxes. I'm living on the fabulous US welfare system (which you created! Thank!). And I mistyped, I don't have two little Americans but twelve. Good thing, my husband stays at home to help out with them as does the rest of our family from Europe. Of course, nobody pays taxes here but we all have our secret accounts in Switzerland.
