It is about a 6 hour drive - mostly on the Autobahn (A7). Possible stops along the way starting from Hamburg are Celle, Hannover, Hildesheim, Gottingen, Kassel and Wurzburg. My preferences would be Celle or Hildesheim, but I like smaller towns rather than cities. Check out each one on the net - all are worthy of a stop over. Have a nice trip!

If you like beer, then Bamberg would be a real treat.
It also has a lovely Altstadt on the Regnitz River--never damaged during the war--and it is still a part of Bamberg's everyday commercial life; unlike Rothenburg which is a tourist preserve. A very attractive tourist preserve, but a tourist preserve nonetheless.
