Best Fitness Center in London Hotel?

We are trying to book a hotel in London (Mayfair, Belgravia, Kinghtsbridge area) for early Octoner, and would like to stay in one that has a state of the art fitness center with a large variety of equipment. I've heard that the Hilton Park Lane, Carlton Tower, and Berkeley have fitness centers, but I need information. I've read consistently dreadful reviews of the Hilton Park Lane, and can't tell just how well maintained their hotel or fitness center is. We prefer moder decor. Any suggestions or insights on the hotels mentioned or any other you can recommend in the areas?

I hate Hiltons - they're bland and overly corporate.

The Berkeley has a fabulous pool and spa area. However, The Mandarin Oriental Hyde Park has a more modern spa centre and is very much in vogue at the moment - a great bar too.

The Mandarin Oriental is quite a bit more pricey, and has more of a traditional decor, from what I can tell. Any thoughts on the Carlton Tower?

Rooms at the Carlton are on the small side, however, they have a small, if respectable swimming pool.

The reason I suggested the Mandarin Oriental is that you mentioned The Berkeley which is in the same price bracket. However, you could always stay at any hotel and ask the concierge (which usually has deals with local fitness centres) for recommendations. However, I'd imagine you'd rather have on-site facilities.

The Carlton is nice, but the least expensive rooms can be small. I've seen the fitness centre; looks very good, but I haven't used it. It overlooks the gardens. Location is good, right on Sloane Street, but the Berkeley is also well located. If the rates are the same, I would choose the Berkeley; I haven't stayed there, but it looks great. I like the Boxwood Cafe in the Berkeley for dinner, and it's supposed to have a very good bar too (which, considering how hard it can be to find a good bar in London, is something to think about too!)

Kingdom, You were right about Mandarin. Same price as Berkeley. I thought it would be about 100GBP more a night.
And you're right that I want on-sight facilities, for both convenience and price. Some public gyms charge upwards of 60GBP per person per day! Yowza.
