Best experience or recommendation for car rental in Italy???

We're planning on renting a car in Italy in October for 2 or 2 1/2 weeks. I've checked rates with Autoeurope, Avis, & Hertz and all are similar. I've always included CDW and theft insurance and am looking at economy or compact; manual is okay and a/c is not necessary. We;ll pick it up upon leaving Rome to visit smaller cities not easily served by Eurorail. We would only be in Italy.

What's your experience and/or recommendation with rental companies in Italy as far as pricing, reliability, convenience, ease of booking and any other areas? Thanks in advance.

Rented a car thru AutoEurope in May 2001 --- 3 day tour of Tuscany. Booked via their website. Everything went fine. Would use their services again.

We have now used Auto Europe three times in Italy and also in Belgium and Austria. Have found them to be reliable and to have the best rates. Check around and I think you will find their rates are best. Have booked through their website and also via phone. Staff has been knowledgeable and competent. We will use them again this spring in Germany. Italy is great---have a wonderful time.

Karen,

Like the others, I have always used Autoeurope to book my rentals overseas. Never any problems at all. They are efficient, responsive and professional, whether you use their website, e-mail or contact them by phone. Like you, I choose manual cars with full insurance coverage (the extra cost is minimal for peace of mind -- and these rates already include VAT charge, while non-insured quotes do not -- need to add 17% tax to those quotes), and always request diesel cars as well (cheaper to buy and plentiful where I have been). Easy to cancel, if necessary as well.

Have a great trip.

John H.

Ditto re: AutoEurope. They had the best rate. Service was great. They are a broker and placed us with
Avis, picking up from the Rome Termini. I still remember the very nice young agent at the Avis desk. He thought we had too much luggage for the economy car we had booked and gave us a free upgrade to a brand new little Mercedes. He gave us perfect directions to exit Rome with no problems. We had a fender bender in that little car and there was absolutely no hassle. Full insurance is mandatory in Italy.
