Best area in London
Hello all! I'm planning a four day holiday in London with my partner during Christmas. I have been travelling all my life but London is really tugging at my wires. I can't understand nor decide in which area I should book our hotel! I heard Kings Cross is ok, but I thought I'd better check. I would really appreciate it if someone would help me out. I need a safe area with good underground connections..
Thanks!!
Thanks!!

That describes almost every area in central London. There is no "Best" area. Kings Cross would be far down my own personal list of neighborhoods. Though it is MUCH better than it was even just a few years ago.
One consideration is how are you arriving in London -- LHR, LGW, STN, by train or ?? Not that this is the main consideration, but some areas are easier to reach from different airports/stations.
How long are you staying? What is your budget? Budget is important because some areas have fewer low/moderate accommodations, while others have fewer posh high end places.

There are lots of areas that could meet your requirements depending on where you want to focus your activity, and what sort of vibe you like. Your best bet is to cross-refer between the guidebook, a map, where you're arriving in London (which airport?), and the places you want to visit in relation to the tube (and bus lines), to see roughly where that places you.

You want "BEST" - go spend $750/night at a top hotel in Central London, Mayfair area would fit the bill for this. Otherwise, the question is unanswerable. London is the size of New York and central London is larger than the Battery-Central Park South swath of Manhattan.
Have you looked at a Tube map? The city is rife with "good underground connections."
The pat advice: stay somewhere on the Piccadilly, District/Circle or Northern Lines and you'll have quick Tube access to most of the main tourist sites.
And this map shows how close various Tube stations are to each other (because the map itself is NOT geographically accurate):

Actually I would stay on the Piccadilly or District Line. Northern Line at the best of times is a bit naff and it doesn't link to much that a tourist would be interested in.
Try using a real map of London like the central London bus routes map provided by TfL so you can see where everything is and where it is in relationship to other places
