Hi,

There are several day trips from Athens. One is rent a car and drive a long the coast, south to the tip of the Sounion Pennisula and see the Temple to Poseidon. There are public beaches a long the way. There are showers etc. You can spend some time swimming on the way to the temple. the temple itself is magnificient. On the way back to Athens go to the town of Vari for dinner. They roast the whole lamb on a spit. The meat is fabulous as are the many vegatables. do not go there if you are a vegitarian. Another suggestion is go to Epidavros to see the specatular theater. In this area are ancient ruins (Agememon), but you might not have enough time to see the ruins and the theater. Go to Delphi or one of the islands. Hydra is wonderful and you can take donkey rides around the island, or go to Aegina where there is a wonderful ancient temple. I have never been to Marathon, but teenagers might be interested in this area. Have fun.
1/ always combine culture with sightseeing and fun when travelling with teens

rent a car ,drive the coastline up to sounion (as described by sue)
stop for lunch, at a seaside fish restaurant
or
go for swim at the 'grand beach' in Lagonissi (lagonissi grand resort)
or at the
astir beach,(the one just before the hotel astir on your right)in Vouliagmeni

there is a lot of fun/hapennings/music/watersports

on your way back to athens, stop for a late dinner in Glyfada,
for greek hamburgers (biftekakia)-cheap/fresh/fast service, at george's restaurant.

2/a day trip to hydra.do not take these pre-packed organised cruises!!
take the hydrofoil in pireaus harbour
spend the day in hydra/swim
..hydra combined with santorini and crete,....heaven on earth!

3/provided that your teens are aged 16 up.
book a table (for 11 pm,not before) at one of the best restaurants/clubs -located on the athens riviera- you can find in europe with super music/crowd/food/lounge to cool off..
like :the privilege-akrotiri-balux
expect to pay 50 to 70 us dol, dinner with drinks per person.
thanks for your advice. i'm leaning toward a trip to Delphi or Hydra. the boys will most likely enjoy hydra, but we will be visiting 2 islands. I'm not comfortable driving myself in Greece. i have a bad sense of direction, and prefer another adult with me in unfamiliar places to help navigate. So if we do Delphi, it will be by taxi or tour bus.
