There are no reviews on TripAdvisor or here.

Can anyone comment on whether the location is safe and convenient? That's my main concern.

I have sent an email inquiry to Ira's favorite B&B in Florence - the B&B Peterson http://www.bedinflorence.it - but haven't gotten a response yet. Also, they seem to charge double rates for my time period (I'm staying December 31 - January 4.)

I've also gotten a rate of 40 Euros per night for a single room without bath at the Instituto Gould - http://www.institutogould.it

I just checked the B&B Peterson.

They do not include breakfast, which was about 2E at the cafe on the corner.

They will have to give you the price of a single.

When did you eml them?

Ira, I emailed B&B Peterson about 30 hours ago. I didn't mean to imply they are slow in responding. So far as I can see from their web site, they only offer the double room price, and no single room price, during the time of my stay.

Ira, B&B Peterson wrote back with a rate of 41 Euros per night for a room with a shared bathroom.

As I mentioned in another thread, this 41 Euro rate is actually for their sister guesthouse - B&B Cassia.

Trying again.

I am once again trying the technique of looking at reviews of nearby hotels to get feedback as to the general area.

I found that according to reviews the nearby Hotel Enza (which is at Via San Zanobi 45) is convenient and walkable to all attractions and most people praise the location. However, a couple reviews on Venere said there is a rough area nearby. Can anyone comment on what the nature of this "rough area" might be?

Casa Rabatti is also nearby and has good recommendations, so I will assume the area is okay unless someone has info to the contrary.

I've just looked up Via San Zanobi on my map of Florence. It's very close to a number of places I know well in Florence, and I'm not aware of any "rough area" near by.

Thanks Eloise for looking that up. I think I will stick with this option then, as no other B&B option I can find includes both breakfast and a private bathroom for 35 Euros per night.

I did a search for Instituto Gould on this forum and came across this thread.

Any more news on budget options in Florence? I just started researching hotels in Florence.

I understand that WillTravel ended up staying in a convent with a curfew. I did take a look at her report. If I remember right, Huitres mentioned another budget option (forget which).

I think if you are doing your usual method of hopping in and out of cities, staying by the SMN train station would be a good idea, and this place would be about 2 km away from there.

I think the B&Bs are most likely fine, but one difficulty with B&Bs is arranging a meet-up time, which appeared to be a problem in some cases.

Huitres recommended Hotel Bavaria.

I think others that sounded pretty good and are sometimes cheap are Hotel Caravaggio and Hotel Montreal.

I remember looking at the map and thinking that Gould is near the Brancacci Chapel. If so, it'd not be too bad as I want to see it anyway. I think that Gould is open until 7 pm -- so it won't be a problem (unless my flight is canceled or delayed -- scheduled arrival in Bologna is 2 pm).

But that's assuming that I'm going to stay with Gould.

Is venere the standard for booking Italian hotels? Are there some others I should look into?

Venere is a good start, but so far the prices I've seen are not as good as what I can get directly. But you can use it to look at a bunch of hotels at once, and then go looking for their own sites.

Gould is near the chapel. It also has some sort of regulation in respect to checking in on Sunday, and if you're checking out on Sunday, pay in advance. So far as I can tell, though, the religious aspect does not affect guests in the slightest, and they say that they use the money for their orphan charities.

I just looked this up in TripAdvisor. It's #19 at the moment and there're two positive reviews from Ga.
