I would really like to visit Eyeries on the north side of the Beara but I have significant difficulty with high mountain roads. I have tried to determine whether this route is significantly heart stopping by checking a satalite map but cannot tell. (I can still remember every frightening inch of the Tim Healy pass)
I would be leaving from Kenmare and returning via the same route (cannot even contemplate the Glengariff?Kenmare route.

The R571 to Eyeries is not a bad drive at all. There are no mountain passes and if you stay off the scenic coastal road, the roads are as wide enough for two cars most (if anot all) of the way. You should be fine.

I'll give it a try! I've been known to back down an Irish road or two rather than go forward. Scary thought, huh!
By the coastal route do you mean the r573 Bunaw?

Oh - the coast of the Beara. Sigh. What a beautiful corner of the world. The coast road, from what I recall is great. And the villages are amazing.

Does it make it easier for you if you drive on the inland side of the road? (as long as that is the correct side for your car to be on!) That's how some people plan their one-way drives along California's highway 1. But I don't recall high cliffs on the Beara. The amazing thing was being right down at water level going through the little wonderful towns. Sigh.

The roads on the penisula are not particularly mountainous by world standards - you might get an idea from my picture here:

Anyway, it will probably be misty and you won't see the vertical difference!
