Bavaria tour help!

We have read many posts and are ready for some feedback for ours since I want to book hotels soon. Background on us... a 30 something couple with a little girl who will be 17 months old for this trip. We are comfortable travelling with her, but the pace will not be as Commando as usual : ) We have been backpacking several times. We are renting a car for the majority of the trip and flights are already booked so no choice there.

July 8-11 nights in Munich without the car, will do a day trip to Dachau and lots of museums, Residenz, parks, etc. It is the beginning of our trip so we are going to relax here.

July 12- pick up car rental and drive to Neus Schloss and see Chiemsee and spend night in Salzburg
July 13- sightsee Salzburg and drive to Reutte, any idea if this is a scenic drive? Windy?
July 14- see Ehrenburg Castle ruins, go on a luge ride and see Linderhof and Wieskirche, spend night again at Reutte
July 15- see Neuschwanstein and Hohen. castles and night in Reutte
July 16 see Oberhofen and Thun and spend night in Lauterbrunnen maybe? We have a car so are limited to which cities to go to.
July 17- take gondola or train up to the mountains, gentle hike?
July 18- see city of Murten and Avenches and spend night in Murten
July 19- see Gruyeres and Chateau de Chillon and night in Murten again
July 20- Murten to Rothernburg stop in Bern briefly. night in Rothenburg/mostly a driving day : (
July 21- see Wurzburg night in Rothenburg
July 22- see Rothenburg and drive to outside Munich airport for flight tomorrow
July 23 fly back

I am tempted to skip Salzburg and Chiemsee to add onto the Lauterbrunnen, but I am worried we might be bored there. We can't hike much with a little one. Also had thought of skipping Rothenburg, but we love medevil cities and also wanted to go to Wurzburg. Anything worth skipping? Would it make more sense to stay in Fussen than Reutte? Also, no jet lag for us since we will be coming from England instead of the US so no time for that.

Any ideas/comments are welcome.
Thanks
Jennifer

Ooops, I almost missed your post b/c you only mentioned Bavaria in the headline (and I am tired of Bavaria).

I'd say skip Salzburg - after a couple of days in Munich you should not spend another day in a city. And Salzburg is a bit out of the way - backtracking to Reutte and the castles is not very convenient.

Add that day to Lauterbrunnen. By the way, no problem to park the car in Lauterbrunnen and stay in Wengen or Mürren - definitely better views.

Don't worry about hiking with a 17month old. Two years ago I advised a couple from the US on this forum who stayed two weeks in the Swiss Alps (one week Mürren); they did some easy hikes with the little girl. They thoroughly enjoyed their trip!

When driving Murten - Rothenburg you should not stop in Bern - although I love Bern, unlike many others here - because it is quite a long distance to Rothenburg. Better arrive earlier in R. Or drive minor roads in Switzerland to see more of the countryside (e.g. via Solothurn (a jewel of an old town) - Balsthal - Jura mountains - Basel)

Looks as if you are somewhat into royal residences so I would not drop Herrenchiemsee as it is, overall, one of the most elaborately decorated of the "castles" (even though it is more a palace than a castle) and was Ludwig's greatest achievement in terms of "duplicating" a mini-Versailles; after going inside you may be a bit letdown by the INTERIOR of Neuschwanstein but I'd definitely go there also. The boat ride over and back although rather brief can be a lot of fun, too. The place is a big favorite with the German population.

Rothenberg has to be almost the quintessential "walled town" complete with moat despite what some people feel is an almost Disney quality (jealousy prompts many a misspoken word). It is definitely worth a visit IMO and the child may be old enough to be spellbound by some of it. Do your "hike" around the top of the city wall if you wish.

Is there any particular reason you've decided NOT to stay in Fuessen or even Oberammergau? You'll definitely be glad you have the car in that area..much more convenient.

Have a wonderful trip.

If you decide to stay in Fussen there is a wonderful place called Suzanne's B&B and if you get an upstairs room you also get the best view of the Alps! Also, you may not be able to hike as much but have you ever been to the top of the Zugspitze? We drove from Fussen and went up the Austrian side - fantastic!

Thanks for all the quick responses, I just realized when I registered I misspelled California, oops! I guess the misspelled name will be stuck with me a while.

I would love to try a pleasant drive, I only included Bern just because it happened to be on the way, maybe I couls stop in Ulm instead.

As for Fussen, no real reason for exclusion. It looked nice, but didn't know where to stay and thought it would be busy so heard aobut Reutte and thought it might be more quaint although we will have to drive more. Will check out Suzanne's, thanks. We are going to try to only go to places taht offer cribs so we are a bit limited.

Didn't even consider Oberammergau (is it a cute town on its own without enjoying theatre?) or Zugspitze (what is the drive like?)

Thank you for helping.

Hi Jenn,
Fussen is a nice place to stay for a few days, only 10 minute drive to Neuschwanstein and Schwangau. You can send your husband early in the morning for tickets, so you won't be waiting all day. I'm guessing Suzanne will have a crib (we stayed there for 5 nights) and she was a wonderful hostess. From Fussen you can drive to the Zugspitze (I think 1 1/2 hour)thru Austria. Very scenic drive with some castle ruins. You can go up the Z on a gondola and spend as much time as you like on top! Make sure to have a cup of Cocoa up there!

Fussen is O.K., but it won't take too long. It is less than an hour from Garmisch. We were just there at the end March on a drive from Geneva to Garmisch. To be honest, I probably wouldn't waste time there.

Chateau de Chillon is a good choice. The tour takes about 90 minutes and the view of the Alps is quite nice. I do recommend lunch at the restaurant across the street. The filet du Perch is quite good. Just to help with planning, Chateau de Chillon is about a 5 hour drive from Garmisch.

A good web site for things in Switzerland is http://www.myswitzerland.com. Lots of good information there.
