Dorset and Devon are beautiful counties, my favourite places are Lyme Regis in Dorset ( where the French Lieutenants Woman was filmed), the southern coastal path between the two counties, Corfe Castle in Dorset and coastal towns in Devon such as Beer and Budleigh Salterton. There are some lovely National Trust properties to visit check out their web site at nationaltrust.org.uk My favourites are Knightshayes Court, Killerton and A La Ronde all in south Devon and Corfe Castle and Kingston Lacey in Dorset. You do not say when you are visiting the UK, but most NT places are open from April to Oct.-Nov. Hope this helps a bit if you want any other info. email me Jan.

In Bovey Tracey, Devon, a terrific B&B called Front Street Guest House, owned by Gail and Ian Campbell...they are unbelievably accomodating, very chatty and full of info. of things to do and may even take you to a neighborhood pub for dinner. The house is packed full of Gail's collections and make it very interesting. I have highly recommended this B&B to others who have been crazy about them and the house.

Dorset is best seen by car (Get a good map, and go carefully on those narrow lanes!) There is a well-organized Dorset tourist board with lots of information -- any search engine will find plenty of info on the web.

I agree about Lyme Regis, and neighboring Charmouth is lovely and less touristy.

Dorchester is a typical English county town with many Thomas Hardy connections. Their County Museum has a special Hardy section. If you're in that area, don't miss a terrific and authentically home-made cream tea at the Wishing Well in Upwey, off the Dorchester/Weymouth road. (They do excellent home-made lunches, too.) Weymouth used to have a very good seafood restaurant on the quay called the Sea Cow -- you might check your guidebook for that. I also recommend the Yalbury Cottage Hotel in Lower Bockhampton (just outside Dorchester)-- we had a wonderful family gathering there with dinner and overnight accommodation. Their fax no. is 1305-266412.

If army stuff is of interest, there is an excellent Tank Museum (I think in Bovington, near the tank training grounds.)

The Dorset coastal path is beautiful, and some places only accessible on foot (Durdle Door, Worbarrow Bay when it's open -- that is, not cut off by an army firing range.) Poole has a spectacular natural harbor, and an appealing old town. (New town is good for shopping.)

Dorset is a less-visited area (at least for most Americans), and has much to offer. I'll be there again next month, to visit family. Have a great trip.
