My wife and I are interested in touring the Basque region in september or October. We would prefer bicycle touring but also love to hike. Any suggestions for routes, guide books, websites, etc? Thank you.

Several good companies run organized walking tours there, e.g., ATG-Oxford, and BCT Scenic Walking.

I took the Backroads walking tour of the Basque region in the summer of 1999 and it was wonderful. The trip took place in June, and the weather was very nice (one day of rain). The guides were great and the food was terrific. Have fun!

Topped a couple of old postings for you - both have "basque" in the title - lots of good information regarding the area. Enjoy!

Thanks everyone for the advice. I will follow-up with the websites. Can anyone recommend any guide books? What about you cyclists out there?

Try www.headwater-breakaway.com or
www.backroads.com if you didn't already find the site for them.
Even if you don't go with a tour company, you can glean much info on planning your own trip.

Lonely Planet's "Walking in Spain" offers some suggestions, too
