Basic questions re: tea at Brown's

We have reservations for a 5:30 tea in two weeks. This will be our first time at Brown's.
*Is it fairly easy to find the Drawing Room once through the main hotel entrance?

*Do they serve the pastries and things at your table... or is it buffet style?

*What have you worn there when attending a tea? Will we get by with nice slacks, sweaters & coats?? Their websites states, "Smart casual attire".

*Upon leaving, do we just ask the doorman to hail us a black cab? Does the doorman receive a tip?

Thanks for your assistance!

You will have no trouble finding the Drawing Room, but if you do simply ask any member of the hotel staff for directions.

You will be served at your table with the most impeccable of service.

Your choice of clothing will be adequate since they request "smart casual" slacks and sweater will be fine. You will see all manners of dress I am sure, some less dressy than you and some dressed to the nines.

You can ask the doorman to get you a cab,and if you do you should of course tip him some amount, perhaps a pound or two. You could also just walk on down the street and hail your own cab or use the underground to make your getaway.

Enjoy your tea it will be a treat.

Another good place for tea is Fortnum and Mason on Piccadilly Street.

this subject has been beaten to death on this board, why don't people do a text search before posting another topic that has already been answered dozens of times...

To MH

Ever consider just ignoring duplicate questions instead of taking your valuable time to write nasty comments!

Thank you VERY much Wilson for taking the time to answer all of my questions. I really appreciate it & we look forward to our tea at Browns!

To M.H. -- I realize I should ignore people like you, but I did indeed do a text search on this subject -- as I always do. I also referred to Brown's website before posting my question here.

My very specific questions were NOT addressed anywhere & as this is an information board where travelers help travelers, I felt it would be all right to ask.

Some people are polite and enjoy passing on their knowledge of the areas they've traveled, to less experienced people. Why people like you lurk around just waiting to pounce on anyone who annoys you is beyond me.

As yyyy states, WHY do you even bother taking the time to look at the posts under these topics, take the time to read AND take the time to post your nastiness?

Incredibly odd behavior & I'll now go back to ignoring it.

You're going to enjoy this treat! We went to Brown's on our first day and with jetlag it was such a relaxing environment, I could have taken a nap. As I recall the Drawing Room is on your right as you enter and easy to find, Wilson has really answered all your questions but I wanted to mention that the food is served on a tiered dish at your table and you can request seconds of any item or items. Have fun!

We had tea at Brown's several years ago. My friend, who is from London, said she thought it was the best "English tea". We all enjoyed it including my husband. The food was wonderful. Be sure and check out the "fainting couch" in the ladies room. Quite Victorian!

Hi basic question person,
Thanks for your specific questions - I received some good info from it. I'm the one who was concerned about the tea at 5:30p to the theater at 7:30p. We, also, are planning to have afternoon tea at either Brown's or the Ritz in two weeks. This is a special treat for us (for the cost, it has to be)and have gone back and forth between Browns and the Ritz forever. Could I ask you why you chose Brown's? Thanks, Joy

Hi Joy,

We chose Brown's mainly from what we've read on this forum. I've done searches on 'London tea' and read everyone's comments on it. Brown's is one at the top of the list.

It sounds wonderful. The bottom line is that there are many places to have tea in London, so we chose one lovely place for this trip. Maybe next time we'll try out the Ritz. Fun!

Have a great time!

Hi,
Thanks for the quick response. I think we'll pick Brown's also. I have to check out the 'fainting couch' someone mentioned. I LOVE this forum.....I have learned way more than a guide book.
Have a great time in London and tea at Browns.
Joyce

We had tea in Brown's. My young niece wanted to have high tea. We had been out all day so she had carried a change of clothes to change from jeans to a dress. When we arrived for a reservation, they were not going to let us in until Teri changed her attire--the others of us were wearing jackets with matching slacks. The food was wonderful--better than Fortnam & Masons and others we tried. Marilyn

xxx, if one little semi-negative post makes you all uptight, you had better get ahold of yourself before your trip. You will encounter all kinds of people and all kinds of attitudes and road-blocks that may ruin your trip otherwise.

Thanks Marilyn. That's good to know. We'll have nice slacks & jackets on, so hopefully that will be acceptable.

I appreciate your input.
