ATM charges

I use a US Bank ATM debit card and was able to withdraw Euro's from the French BNP Parabas ATM's for just the 1% exchange fee. Is there a bank in the UK and Republic of Ireland that is affiliated with US Bank? I will be visiting Ireland, Northern Ireland and London in October 06 and most other bank's charge 3%. US Bank customer non-service will not or cannot help me.

You have to ask US Bank for what they charge on their end....

If you are making a cirrus or plus withdrawal at any bank throughout Europe, the European bank is not allowed to charge you anything.

"US Bank customer non-service will not or cannot help me."

You're kidding right? They need to change the name of that department. They are the only ones who can tell you what they will charge you and the only ones who can tell you if they have a partner bank in Ireland or the UK. I'd suggest you call them again and keep asking for someone else until you can find out. Someone in a department called "customer service" has to be willing to service a customer.

I can't believe I copied your statement without seeing you had already cleverly and appropriately changed the name of that department. Nevertheless -- someone should be able to help you.

Do you have a local US Bank where you live ramgleral? If so I would go to that branch, talk to the branch manager and insist on the answer.

BTW, I have US Bank in my city. Pleasant personnel but when I asked them about opening up a checking account, obtaining an atm/debit card etc they didn't seem to know much about their atm's in Europe or the banks atm charges. When I talked to the Mgr she didn't know either..she said she gets euro's at SFO before leaving for Europe. No, not at an ATM machine but at a international exchange desk.

Maybe you need to find a bank that can give you the service and information that you need.

Neopolitan: Sorry about my non-service crack. My cynical sense of humor. I have talked to several different departments at US Bank to no avail. This morning I went down to the main branch in my town to try and coax a manager into giving out the secret special phone number that most corporate managers have on file to call when they need help. The manager would not give me the number, but she called a number herself and got no information. In fact her corporate source did not think that US Bank had any forign affilates. Of course they do have one in France that I found out about last year, BNP Parabas Bank.

Love Italy: I think you are right. I will apply for a new card today.

rambleral...

The question of affiliated banks may not play any role in this discussion but it all lies within the policy of US Bank and nowhere else....

It is very possible there is no list of affiliated banks and the bank simply does not charge for ATM withdrawals either not for them at all or for a certain amount each month..my citibank account does not charge me for atm withdrawals anyplace in the world no matter how many I make..there are no affiliated banks.

You say you discovered by accident BNP is an affiliated bank but did you make withdrawals from any other French bank and were you charged by US Bank for it....

You and US Bank may be talking different languages.

I do know Bank of America has a list of affiliated banks where they say they will not charge for an ATM withdrawals; otherwise I beleve they give you 2 free ones per statement cycle and then charge $5 for each additional one but that to my mind is an exception.

Your question to customer service should be very simple, do they charge for withdrawals from ATM's of banks outside the United States...it is possible you get a certain number of withdrawals for free each statement cycle or they may be an enlightened bank and charge nothing or you may be correct they have affiliated banks which they don't charge for withdrawals from ATM.

Be aware, as I noted, that as long as you stick to European banks and not convenience store ATM, any withdrawals that you make using cirrus or plus will not incur any fees from the foreign bank no matter what your bank charges.

xyz: Thanks for your answers. I believe that you are right. I will ask customer service if there are withdrawl charges outside the U.S.
I also only use ATM's out side of bank buildings or in the airport terminals. Because of horror stories related on this forum, I never use ATM,s in convience stores or gas stations in the USA or overseas.
Thanks again for all your comments.

Very good, detailed info from xyz123.

My bank charges me a flat fee for each withdrawal at any ATM not owned by them - in the US and abroad. (The exchange rate for foreign currency is fine.)

For this reason, I withdraw large amounts of cash just a few times.

And use a Capitol One Visa card for all my charges.

One slight correction to xyz's post. With Bank of America you don't normally get two free withdrawals per cycle from non affiliated banks. I do, as I have an Advantage Account. Certain other special accounts there may do the same thing, but many posters have indicated they do not get the two free withdrawals each month.

Washington Mutual also has a free checking account that does not charge extra for withdrawals from other non-WaMu ATMs.

(p.s. I don't work for them!)

Bank of NY charges a flat $6 every time you use a non-USA bank for an ATM withdrawal. I've used my debit card all over the world and have NEVER gotten a charge from any foreign bank in any country. As one of the previous posters mentioned, I also try to withdraw larger amounts of money so as not to incur any unnecessary $6 charges as they tend to add up after a while.

This thread just reminded me that I need to get a Credit Union account open soon.

I have found they tend to be very good on fees. I am going to open a travel account there to avoid the fees that BOA charges and that I consider unresonable.

Free checking no mimumu required
ATM card.....no fee for 10 transactions a month on their part and while not a factotr in Europe they will refund the fee other banks charge for having the audacity to access your money on their machines up to I believe $15/month...great for domestic travel in the US.

At risk of re-opening this can of worms that has been discussed - but not necesarily resolved - previously, apples to apples comparisons require looking at more than just fees for use of foreign (as in not belonging to the bank where you have your account, no matter in what country) ATM's. Many banks and even some CU's tack on additional "currency conversion fees" and may use an exchange rate that is not the best available. As the song goes, you better shop around.
