ATM Cards/Y2K Problems?
A while back, I read a posting from someone that was unable to use her ATM card anywhere she went in Europe, other than a US military base in Germany. It was a debit card with a 4 digit PIN, not beginning with 0 and the only thing she thought could be the problem was an expiration of 04/02. Has anyone else experienced problems using ATM debit cards with an expiration beyond 1999? Thanks

No problems in Morocco, Naxos, Munich Airport, Paris, or Italy. I have run into an occasional machine that hates me (but, it happens in the U.S., too). Before I used my ATM in Europe, I notified my bank, got a higher daily limit, etc., assuming the bank might block the card if they saw overseas withdrawals.

My husband's new Visa debit card is functioning just as well as the old one did. I've noticed that 90% of the problems people report are caused by their banks back home which aren't used to dealing with international travelers, rather than by ATMs in Europe.

Last fall we flew into the Vienna airport. My wife used her ATM card and the machine kept it! A bank kiosh was attached to the machine and we asked for help. The worker said the card was being kept "for security reasons" and did not return it to us. I then used my card, no problem. The difference was this---her's expired 01/01 and my card expired 09/99. Now we travel with two cards--one with a 12/99 date.

ATM CARDS/Y2K
Re: ATM cards in Europe. We had the same problem. We have a Cal Fed and a
Wells Fargo card. The Wells Fargo card
would work everywhere but the Cal Fed
card would only work at military bases
where they are connected with Andrew
Air Force Base. We went inside one bank
and asked an employee and she said it
had to have the Master Charge or Visa
logo on the bank. It wasn't enough that
it had cirrus or plus
