athens restaurant advice
We are thinking of going to Orizontes in Athens as a special night to celebrate our 40th anniversary. It is supposed to be excellent and very beautifully located on top of Lycabetius Hill overlooking the city. Has anyone eaten there? It is rather pricey, which is fine, if it is worth it.

The food at Orizontes in not , however the location is fabulous.
My suggestion;go for a drink on Lycabettus hill and then straight to the Etrusco the roof garden restaurant of the Hotel Athens Callirohe wich is one of the most acclaimed places in the city.

We had a fabulous meal at the Grande Bretagne Hotel Rooftop Garden restaurant.
Wonderful Acropolis views, fantastic food, wine and service. My husband and I each had an appetizer, entree and dessert. I had a champagne apperitif, he had a mixed drink and we shared a bottle of Greek merlot.
With tip total was about 200 Euro and worth it!

Thanks Judy and mzani. We could not get an outside table at Orizontes, so that is out. Since we are staying at the Grande Bretagne, maybe we should just enjoy a wonderful dinner there. The next night our driver for the day will suggest a good Greek but not touristy restarant.
Anyone out there hear of Ta Kioupia? Is this a touristy restaurant where you have more quantity than quality? Just noticed it somewhere and it looked interesting.

We stayed there in June and several weeks prior to our trip I emailed the hotel with several possibilities and asked them to make reservations for us. We were concerned because Sunday nights many restaurants are closed. They were happy to do this and emailed us with our place and time.
The evening we arrived we asked the Concierge for a suggestion of a more casual restaurant. He had several and as it turned out, it was our favorite of the Athens stay. They were so accommodating at the Grande Bretagne and we were staying in one of the least expensive rooms. Also, don't miss having a drink at the top of the hotel as the view is fabulous. The pool is great after a day of sightseeing.

Ta Kioupia are not bad at all!They are located in one of the chicest suburbs of Athens, Politia.
Why not trying Lambros in Vouliagmeni or maybe Ithaki (wich is more expensive) both of them are overlooking the sea, food(seafood and greek specialities) is delicious.
In any case, if your are looking for top awarded cuisine then Spondi is THE best (for the same price as at the GB)...and my favorite greek cuisine restaurant is Strofi, on Rovertou Galli Street; warm service, fresh food and an incredible Acropolis view .

We arrived in Athens on a Saturday, late afternoon, and hesitated to make a dinner reservation in the event our plane did not land on time. Plus, we knew we would be really tired from our trip and did not want to have a big night ahead of us. Lethos was not expensive but the food was delicious.
We were tired from our trip and just got an assortment of interesting appetizers and a bottle of Greek wine.
We sat outside and enjoyed watching the
Greek families that were also having dinnner. This restaurant was very low key but was so much fun. After dinner, we walked around in this part of the city, before going back to the Grand Bretagne for possibly the best sleep I have ever had. We were exhausted from traveling and the fabulous bed and linens had us asleep in about two minutes. There were several other places that were suggested by the Concierge and I am sure that they were also very good. If you have any extra time in Athens, we loved the Benaki Museum.
It is near the Grand Bretagne and so interesting and very user friendly.
We only had a little over an hour
there but it was well spent. The hotel is in a great location and you can see many of the highlights of Athens in one day.
I was amazed at how close things were located. Our big night in Athens was at Daphne's. The food was great and the restaurant was so pretty. However, we were among either English or Americans and wished we had chosen a place that was more typically Greek. Hope this helps you plan your special 40th celebration. Dear AKNIC,
Thanks for all your good advice. As we are arriving early and will have had time to rest, we will have our more romantic dinner on Sat and then on sunday have a more traditional Greek restaurant which we will leave up to our driver.
Looks like we can't go wwrong no matter where we choose to eat!
