Ariccia...a day trip from Rome?
I'll be in Rome for 7 nights in November. This will be my 5th trip to Rome in 4 years and I am becoming slightly more familiar with the city...you could say I've fallen head over heals for it!
Last October when I was there I did 2 day trips out of the city. One to Hadrian's Villa and Tivoli and the other to Orvieto . I enjoyed both day trips and thought it was a great way to spend a day.
Now that I am going back I thought another day trip that wasn't too far away would be nice and I came across information on the Castelli Romani wine trail. After reading a little about it, the towns of Frascati and Ariccia seemed to be the front-runners for me. Then I read about Ariccia having reknown porchetta and let's face it, for me a huge part of travel is food and I love porchetta! Also, I understand there is a palazzo in Ariccia that was owned by the Chigi family and it sounded like an interesting place to see.
I've read Ariccia can be reached by taking the Metro A line to the last stop and then catching a bus to Ariccia. My question is, has anyone done this and did you enjoy it? Ariccia has now risen to the top consideration because it seems like I can reach it more easily than I can Frascati. I'm not interested in renting a car for the day because I do no want to battle the traffic getting out of, into and around Rome.

I haven't been to Ariccia, but I don't know why you think it's easier to reach than Frascati. There are trains from Roma Termini to Frascati that take about 30 minutes. For Ariccia, you have to take the Metro all the way to Anagnina, and the bus then takes 40 minutes.

Kybourbon...
I haven't been to Castel Gandolfo. I did consider it. But I don't want to cram too much into one day and I'd prefer to just do one day trip outside of Rome on this trip. From the descriptions I've read Ariccia just seemed more to my liking.
Zerlina...
I didn't realize the bus would be a 40 minute ride from the Anagnina metro stop, the information I read didn't give a time estimate, but made it sound faster than 40 minutes. Thanks for the information.

I would assume any bus going to Ariccia would also stop in Castel Gandolfo. They are just three miles apart.
You might consider picking up a car for the day at Ciampino airport which is only 8 miles from Ariccia if you also want to stop in Frascati which is on the other side of the lake.

You can take the train from Termini as far as Albano Laziale (48 minutes, 1.90€). Mappy says Albano Laziale is one mile from Ariccia. That might be walkable (look at terrain on Google maps)or perhaps a taxi. Mappy has a pedestrian route feature. Last train back to Rome Termini from Albano leaves at 22:13.

I'm afraid that's not how it works. Of about 50 buses a day from Rome to Ariccia, four stop in Castel Gandolfo.
For detailed bus information about buses to Ariccia, look at
http://www.cotralspa.it/PDF_Orari_Comune/Ariccia.pdf
And I doubt that taxis are thick on the ground in Albano Laziale. But there are frequent buses from there to Ariccia.
The Cotral Web site is not very user-friendly, but it has detailed bus schedules for every comune in Lazio.

Have you seen this wonderful day trip to Aricci? Suggestion is to connect at Anagnina, the end of the underground line. Great photos - I can see why you want to go!
