Are there any nice markets in the 6th?

We are planning a trip to Paris and we were thinking of staying in the 7th for 2 weeks but someone suggested the 6th...

We would like to be close to a market as we love to picnic and thought Rue Cler in the 7th would be nice but are there places like that in the 6th that you could recommend.

We were hoping to be close to either The Tower or Notre Dame, what would be close in the 6th?

Thanks for any and all info.

The 6th has a street market on rue de Buci. I have not been to the rue Cler street market, but I have seen photos of it. It seems larger than the rue de Buci one.

I do recommend the rue Mouffetard street market which is in the 5th district. That one is extensive and the area seems more like old Paris to me.

Hi PB,

The marche' St Germaine is an enclosed mall with a very good food area as well as clothes, etc.

If you look up the address at www.mappy.com, you will see that you can walk to Notre Dame and the D'Orsay Museum with no trouble.

A walk along the quays of the Seine to the Eiffel Tour is a nice walk on a pleasant day.

Rue Cler area is definitely quieter than the Rue de Buci. Rue Cler to me seems a little more dignified and quiet, Rue de Buci noiser, busier, more restaurants, and shops. Most people would prefer Rue de Buci.

Notre Dame is closer to Rue de Buci, Eiffel Tower closer to Rue Cler.

I have stayed for weeks at a time within two blocks of Rue de Buci for years, about 6 times now. I have always seen these reports here about their street market, and for the life of me I can't think what people are talking about. Within a one block area there are a couple of regular stores there that set out some displays outside. There is a nice flower market display. Several patisseries and deli type places have things available on the sidewalk in front of their stores. But to think of it as one of the really wonderful "farmer market" type places often spotted around the city is way off. Don't get me wrong -- I love the area, but to think of it as a major sort of market just seems silly to me. It is no big deal for that.

There now. I've said what I've been holding in for years. (I used to check every day thinking maybe I just wasn't looking on the right day -- nope it is always pretty much the same, except non existant on Sundays.)

The rue de Buci street market is small as I said before. It is nice but it is very very limited and it's not more than a block long. The only other street market I've seen is on rue Mouffetard and that one is much nicer than the one on rue de Buci in my opinion. I don't understand all the hype about the rue de Buci market really.

Photobear is simply looking for a central outdoor market in the 6th to pick up a few picnic items - not necessarily the largest, most evocative, oldest, etc.

Rue de Buci will fill the need (and is quite charming to boot).

If you're still considering the 7th, the Hotel la Bourdonnais has the advantage of being next to a small grocery market, plus being around the corner from Rue Cler. The grocery market I wouldn't recommend for produce, but other staples are easy to find. Between the hotel and Rue Cler is also a fruit market with the best produce we saw, and slightly less expensive than on the Rue Cler, which is just a block or so away. The hotel is on a nice, quiet, upscale street, just across from the Champs de Mars. Even rooms with balcony views of the Eiffel Tower.

If you click on my name above, you will find my travel report of London-Paris-Amsterdam, with more specifics on the hotel and recommendations for restaurants and activities in Paris we liked. Lucky you to have TWO weeks there!

bardo, I guess I interpreted Photobear's post quite differently than you did. When he said "like that" talking about Rue Cler, that's what I thought he meant. Rue de Buci market is nothing "like" Rue Cler's. Meanwhile, can anyone tell me any place in Paris that DOESN'T have a place to pick up picnic supplies within 5 minutes or less?

Huh, ira? There are a number of places within 5 minutes of the middle of Champs de Mars, unless you're including time to come down off the Eiffel Tower?

Patrick,
I have been thinking the same thing about Rue Buci for years...we go to Paris almost every year and stay in the 6th at either Relais Christine or D'Aubusson and I thought I was missing something....there really is no "market" on Rue Buci....just as you described. I love the area but there is not really a market in the traditional sense.

Whew. I thought it was just me. About 8 or 9 years ago Rue Buci had a little more than they do now, but then the stores themselves (the one supermarked in particular) became bigger and more moved inside. The markets I really like are the ones in a neighborhood that set up one day a week and lots of local farmers and other people set up booths with all the cheeses, produce, crafts and everything else imagineable. That's what I think of when someone is asking about a real market. Although I also like Mouffetard and Cler as "market" streets as well as Montogril (spelling error, I know)

As I said already, I've never had the opportunity to visit the rue Cler street market. And I do think it compares to the rue Mouffetard market judging from photos. Mouffetard seems more 'authentic' than the Buci market. You find alot of locals shopping on rue Mouffetard and it's really like a postcard scene. There's alot of variety: seafood markets, rotisseries, cheese and chocolate shops, and even a holly vendor in December.

Hi there...Thanks for all the help.

We are looking at a few places but an apartment in the 7th caught our eye...It says it's "Directly on Avenue de la Bourdonnais" Would this be a good location?

To me both rue Cler and rue de Buci are just stores that put out street displays..if you want a REAL market then go to Monge, Saxe Breteuil,Richard Lenoir, etc and you have merchants coming in from the provinces with wonderful cheeses, produce, charcuterie..but you do have to chose your day.

You certainly won't starve or lack choice in either area!
