apartment near the train station

Hi, we found an apartment to rent for a week near the train station. It's really nice and in our price range, but we were wondering if that's an okay place to stay. The street is "Via Principe Umberto." I am interested in any/all info you have on this area. THANKS!

Is this a contest? I'll guess Rome.

Could you state which city this street is located in? The forum is not city specific. I am guessing it's Milan? Or is it Rome?

Since you're staying for a week I would definitely not stay near the train station - I'm assuming Termini. In passing thru Rome, I stayed one night in a really dumpy place (the website looked fine) a couple of blocks from the train station and another night (coming back thru Rome) in a o.k. place but the area is crappy.

Just take a taxi from and to the train station and pick a nicer area to stay in. Personally, I like the Campo di Fiori area (taxi was approx. 10E) but there are plenty of nice areas.

Also, add up the price of the train from the airport (if that's where you're coming from) plus the taxi to your apt (if you decide to stay away from the train station). The limo service from the airport to your apt is approx. 50E and well worth not hassling with any other form of travel.

I was on a budget but the limo was a godsend

Yeah, Campo di Fiori sounds nice. I haven't found that many in my price range (under 100euro), but I am still looking. I am mostly using the website:
www.rentalinrome.com
They have some good prices, but I've found some of the apartments are not in the area they say they are.

ekt,
I've used realrome.com to rent before and had no problems. They have a number of inepensive apartments near Campo dei Fiori and other central locations. Nothing fancy, of course, but more than adequate.

Okay, we have decided to pass on the train station location. My other options so far are:
1) An apt. in the "Parioli Area" on Via Donizetti
2) Trastavere area

My main concern is that we would like to be in an area that is not too far from the center, but at a good price.
Anybody know anything about the two areas listed above?? Thanks!

We like the Parioli area. We actually once stayed in a hotel not far from the apartment you're considering. It is a bit far from the main sights--you have to go through the Borghese park to get to "old" Rome--but the park is very nice and has some worthwhile sights.

Don't remember your particular street.

One reason we liked it: Every evening when we returned from sightseeing and just wandering about, we'd head off into more residential areas and just find a small neighborhood restaurant that looked good. No menus in English. A good sign.

One better known Parioli restaurant we enjoyed was the Ambasciata d' Abruzzo on Via Pietro Tacchini.

This was almost 10 years ago, so it might have changed, but we did enjoy our 5 days there.

But if it's your first time in Rome, you might want to be closer to the major sights--or not.
