Why just big cities?
Only Venice would be in my top 10 destinations in Europe.

PalenQ Jul 31st, 2013 01:33 PM

not just big cities - any city or town - Rothenburg could be one or some small village - me I like big cities others may not.

thanks for the comment and to clarify!

I agree with Bob. I don’t know why everybody is so obsessed with cities. The more that I visit, the more I am starting to want to avoid them. I realize that cities are usually the transportation, cultural & culinary hub of a country but more & more I find that my tolerance level for the traffic, crowds & noise of a city is diminishing. And the sites & museums of most major centers are so over-crowded during the prime tourist times of the year that they have zero charm & increasingly less & less appeal for me. Maybe I am just getting old & grouchy but I am starting to prefer the tiny villages & the remote places more.

Anyway . . .

Paris
Ravello
Sevilla
Vienna
Granada
Siracusa
Edinburgh
Sopron
Todi
Modica

These are the places that I would return to.

Because it is what some of us prefer.
Small towns bore me after a day.

Hard to find one original thought in the bunch. I'll give bobthenavigator top marks for Portovenere. All the rest pretty much fit the 'most commonly visited' list for Europe.

Nothing wrong with that of course if you like being common.

Peter_S_Aus Aug 2nd, 2013 11:09 PM

I have not visited enough cities in Europe to make a sensible comparison.

Venice is our favourite
Rome is fun.

RM67 Aug 3rd, 2013 03:29 AM

Improviser - the title of the post is favourite CITIES. I'm sure everyone could be quirky and original if the brief had been to come up with towns and villages, or any place in Europe regardless of population or designation as a municipality. You do say some ill-thought out things in your efforts to be crushing.

centraleurope Aug 3rd, 2013 03:40 AM

I love being common... It suits me really well. I am also down to earth and friendly.

Some people prefer mean, smug, and self absorbed... Another perfectly valid choice.

Barcelona
Amsterdam

I haven't been to a ton of places, but those are my 3 faves so far

Posting from Helsinki where it is currently (6pm) 24 degrees. Sun is shining ,water is sparkling and everyone is out enjoying the weather. There can't be anywhere nicer in the world!

So in six months, it is not your favorite city?

outwest Aug 3rd, 2013 07:48 AM

I haven't been to enough places to pick ten, but cities I've had a great time in include (in no particular order)

Antwerp
Amsterdam
Brussels
London
Prague
Paris
Rotterdam

Improviser Aug 3rd, 2013 07:57 AM

LOL, some of you are truly challenged. I can't say in what way in a public forum.

RM67, here is a list of cities in just France:
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/List_of...s_(2010_census)

Now how many of them do you think anyone is going to list here? Do not stick your foot in your mouth and suggest you know whether I am referring to cities or towns/villages.

"I'm sure everyone could be quirky and original if the brief had been to come up with towns and villages,"

No, RM67, everyone could not be original EVEN just coming up with CITIES to choose from. What you get is the COMMON list of well known places.

What I wrote is not "ill-thought out", it is carefully thought out. What I wrote is not intended to be "crushing", it is intended to make people THINK. Do not presume to know what my intentions are, you aren't a mind reader. If you want to know what my intentions are, ask. Otherwise you end up with footinmouthitis.

WHY do people list the same places over and over? WHY do people only visit the same places as everyone else does? Yes we should all visit Rome or Venice (examples only), they are worthwhile and have a lot to offer the visitor. But WHY do individuals not also visit other places of individual interest to them?

WHY do you not see someone posting on this forum and saying (an example only), 'here is my planned visit to Europe. I intend to visit 10 places where Picasso lived and worked, as I am fascinated by his work.' That list would be far different than the average list would it not.

Most people go where the herd goes, pure and simple. The word 'common' has a meaning. What is it? In the terms we are talking about here, it refers to going to places where people COMMONLY go. Nothing wrong with that if you like being common. One of the masses who does what the masses do.

But maybe, just maybe, it might be interesting to go off the beaten track that everyone talks about wanting to go off and never does. It isn't about doing so being better, just different, not common.

Come up with a list based on something other than you've heard of them all and others go there. Come up with something ORIGINAL.

I recall one guy from Australian (on another forum) who decided he wanted to bowl a game in a bowling alley in every state in the continental USA. He posted to ask for a list of peoples' favourite bowling alleys in their home state. You may or may not think much of that ambition but that's irrelevant. At least he had an original idea.

Now compare that to this thread. No offense intended PalenQ but what would the lists you got look like if instead you had posted the question, 'What are your favourite cities in your HOME country?'

If you read 10 responses to that by Italians and saw that 8 out of 10 had listed Lecce, that might cause you to wonder why you had never heard of Lecce. Do you think Lecce is going to turn up on this current thread? I think not and yet it is an incredible city to visit. But it isn't COMMONLY listed in 'the top 10 of Europe'.
http://www.dailymail.co.uk/travel/ar...st-world-.html

However insulted people might feel, the fact is most people are tourists who tour the usual places. Few are truly independent travellers who think for themselves independently. But anyone can change that for themselves at any time. Just stop doing what is COMMON and look for yourself at places to go rather than following the herd all the time.

Go to Italy(again, only an example), start in Rome, hire a car and drive south for 2 weeks. See what you find.

centraleurope Aug 3rd, 2013 08:29 AM

Improviser... Your list would be fascinating. What is it?
