Amazing Buildings & Structures? And a Children's Museum...

<b>BACKGROUND</b> - My husband and I have again agreed to volunteer our services and build a display for our local Children's Museum. http://www.the-childrens-museum.org/ This year's theme is BUILDING.

Our idea for a display is to build a series of 4 flats with a map of the world on each flat and 15 photographs showing buildings and structures from around the world. A small description of the building, as well as when it was built, will be provided with each photograph. The child can discover the location of the building by pushing a button, which will reveal the city/state/country/continent as well as illuminate an LED light on the map. Each flat will represent a period in time (ex. ancient, middle ages, modern and somewhere in between). Here's how you can help....

<b>#1 - COMPILING LIST OF BUILDINGS</b> - So far I have about 25 buildings/structures on my list including New Grange in Ireland (the world's oldest building), Petra, Angkor Wat, Chaco Canyon, Great Zimbabwe City, Great Wall of China, Stonehenge, Machu Pichu, Pyramids/Sphynx, Taj Mahal, Halley Research Station in Antartica, International Space Station, the Fred &amp; Ginger House in Prague, Kijk Kubus in Rotterdam, Leaning Tower of Pisa, Golden Gate Bridge, a Roman aquaduct system, terracing and a few other possibilities. I also want to include London Bridge, which I'm guessing the children will assume is in London and will be surprised to learn it's actually in Lake Havasu City, Arizona. Also, Neuschwanstein in Bavaria, Germany, which I'm sure the kids will guess is Disneyland/world.

I need suggestions of other buildings/structures that you think I should include in our display. As well as the name, it would assist me if you also provided the city, state, country, continent where the building is located so I can do research.

<b>#2 - HELP ME WITH MY RESEARCH</b> - ONLY if you are so inclined and have the time and information to share, perhaps you can also provide me with the date of the structure as well as a little description (25-50 words). And, if you are aware of an internet site where I can download a picture of the building, and some history, that will save me a lot of time googling for the information. Credit of photographs will be given on the display, when possible.

Any suggestions and information that you can provide will be greatly appreciated - last year over 8000 kids came through the Children's Museum. Peace. &gt;-

How about:

Chartres Cathedral

The Roman Colosseum

The Parthenon

The Eiffel Tower

A troglodyte village (e.g., in the P&eacute;rigord or Matmata in Tunisia)

The Ice Hotel (in Norway, I think?)

The new bridge at Millau

The best list is available at

http://www.greatbuildings.com/buildings.html

There are several hundred buildings listed, and you can get a quick detail of each building.

Some claim the Hyopgeum (3600 BC-2500BC) in Malta is the oldest monument.

Here's a few I could think of

The Hermitage, St. Petersburg
The Wailing Wall and/or the Dome on the Rock, Jerusalem
Sydney Opera House
Rialto Bridge, Venice
Potala Palace, Lhasa Tibet
Krak des Chevaliers, Syria
Burg al Arab Hotel, Dubai (http://www.burj-al-arab.com/)
The Gateway Arch, St. Louis (ok, it's my hometown but it really is impressive. World's tallest monument @ 630ft, and very graceful.)

An FYI you may already know. Go to Google and click on &quot;Images&quot; above the search box to get pics of almost anything.

Just as a friendly reminder to everyone...
A google image search (or any other search engine for that matter) brings up copyrighted images. I'm not saying that's the case here, but many people believe that if they find it on the image search, Google has put it there for public use. Please respect copyrights and ask the artist (or copyright holder if not the same) for permission to use, be it for professional purposes or for your computer screen saver. Thanks! : )

Hi art,

You might want to include Tower Bridge, which is in London.

I prefer the Chrysler building (NYC) to the Empire State.

The Eiffel Tower (Paris)

The Taj Mahal (Agra, India)

The Pyramids at Giza, Egypt.

The Kremlin, Moscow, Russia.

Jefferson's Home, Monticello, near Charlottesville, VA.

Chrysler Buliding over the Empire State Building in NYC? I don't thinks so.

Since when has Chrysler Building become more of a Big Apple landmark than the Empire Estate Building? I don't want to argue the merits of one versus the other, but for God's sake, even King Kong recognized the ESB!

The Big Ben and the House of Parliament probably distinguishes the city as much as any other structure in London.

Before anyone gets all up tight about copyright violations, I suggest that they peruse the Fair Use provisions in 17 USC § 107. In short, if you're using a work for educational or personal use, it's exempt.

<b>http://www.copyright.gov/title17/92chap1.html#107</b>

Copyright law is intended to prohibit people from using another's work for profit, not from having a screensaver.

Perhaps, but at the very least it is courteous to ask the artists' permission and to let them know how you intend to use his work and thank them. I'm just pointing out that the google search brings up private property, which I don't think is apparent enough on the google pages.

<b>UPDATE</b> - What great suggestions I've been getting...it will be hard to narrow down which 60 buildings to select out of so many. I've spent the last two days researching all the links provided and mapping out the locations.

<b>GENERAL QUESTION</b> - I'm realy lacking on buildings/structures in South America and Africa (not including Egypt). Any suggestions for these two regions?

<b>StCirq</b> - I would be interested in a little more info about the Troglodyte villages. The best I could find on my search was La Roque St. Cristophe in France. I this what you were suggesting?

<b>JudyC</b> - The oldest monument at Hyopgeum, Malta sounds interesting but I've been having trouble finding info, so any additional history that you could provide would be appreciated.

I have about 50 of the 60 buildings selected so far, so I'm still looking for suggestions, if anyone has any to contribute.

Thanks for all your help. Peace.

44. Tower Bridge (1886 - 1894), London, England, United Kingdom

60. Millau Bridge (2001 - 2004), Millau, France

Narrowing the list down to just 60 buildings was a painstaking task. I could have easily picked 60 structures just in Europe, probably half of them in Italy, but I wanted to represent all continental regions (is that five continents, or is it seven?)

Also, the picture image that I was able to find was a very important part of the decision making process. Many buildings were eliminated simply because I could not find a good image.

Peace, Robyn &gt;-

By the way, there's supposedly software that shows what Sagrada Familia would look like when finished (I remember reading some article about this in the Times).

The article is a premium article:

http://query.nytimes.com/gst/abstrac...archive:Search

It's quite an interesting list of buildings.

One tiny fault -- it's Taipei (not Taipai). Since it's a city, I feel compelled to point it out, so don't take it the wrong way.

Thanks again.

Villa Savoy - Corbusier - one of the most important modernist buidlings, just outside Paris. The conceptual ideas are better than the actual building ( the main problem with international style).

Another Corbu building - Ronchamp. A small pilgramige church.

Fallingwaters, SC Johnson Wax Company + Guggenheim Building in NYC by Frank Lloyd Wright. Though I think Wright has been a bit too idolized - and his buildings have major leak problems (and his furniture is really uncomfortable) - he epitomizes a certain American style.

Luis Barrag&aacute;n, an architect from Mexico. The House in Tacubaya - just put on UNESCO heritage list.

Gehry's Bilbao or his home in Santa Monica are far more significant than his Fred +Ginger building.

I can understand that it must be next to impossible to narrow the list to 60 or, even harder, 15. But I am surprised not to see the Alhambra in Granada included in the suggestions. While we have not seen most of those on the list, the Alhambra is certainly among the most memorable of those we have seen.
