Amalfi Coast Private Tour Driver

I have read the reviews of various private tour drivers for the Amalfi Coast on this forum and contacted them for price quotes. My dilemma is that the specific drivers mentioned in the reviews will not be personally available on the date requested by me, but have stated they have other drivers available to accommodate us. I need to know if anyone has had a problem with any of the tour companies when they use another driver. The Amalfi Coast is very windy, and I want to make sure we get a safe and reliable driver. Any feedback is welcomed.

The drivers know the area very well and it a driver with a good reputation recommends one he would be a good driver. Now if he has personality and the ability to exchange ideas with you and take an interest in your trip that is another story. Tell the original driver what you expect and he will be able to find you someone suitable I'm sure.

Also you can wait until you arrive and arrange tours with any taxi driver that you find compatible with your group and your expectations. Go to the squares where they wait for customers and start up a conversation or ask around.

I assume that you already contacted tourofitaly.com? We've been out with Giovanni Gargiulo and Giancarlo, his son, several times and would highly recommend both of them.

Sorry to jump in, but I just got a similar response from Francesco Marrapese:

"I'm not sure I'd be eventually available on that date (Oct 10, 2006), so in case I won't I could arrange for a professional English speaking driver friend/colleague of mine to take care of you."

I think I'll try tourofitaly.com

Apparently, getting a license to drive people is a complicated thing in Italy. They only award a certain number of licenses a year.

My experience is with Francesco. We wanted to use his services for a number of trips. He was very upfront and said that on some of those trips he'd have to let another driver take us due to scheduling conflicts. The other driver was GREAT. Both of them are great.

I suspect any professional driver is going to be good, is going to know how to drive, is going to know which route to take, is goign to know the area.
