38N in Germany and north Italy (+ Prague and Wroclaw)
38 nights in May/June 2026 - currently on a solo trip visiting Germany, Prague, Wrocław and north Italy.
The purpose of my travels is to revisit each of my parents’ childhood home towns in Saxony, Germany and reunite with my cousins. My cousins (in Germany) and I (in Australia) arranged a reunion trip for my father and his sister in 2018, and I’m grateful we did as this was the last time they saw each other https://www.fodors.com/community/eur...varia-1658311/ I followed that up with a trip with my mother in 2019 joined by another cousin, https://www.fodors.com/community/eur...italy-1672451/ We all lost a parent in the past year and decided we needed to catch up, plus I have enjoyed some family trips to north Italy and love this region. When I last visited Saxony, we based in Chemnitz, and daytripped visiting the Bastei bridge, Königstein Fortress, Dresden (museums including the Green Vault, Semper Opera house tour), Meissen, St Moritzburg, Fichtelberg, Annaberg Buchholz, Bad Schlema and then Karlovy Vary. This is a striking and varied region with dramatic geological formations - the Sandstone Mountains, gorges, forests, rivers, vibrant cities, charming villages, castles, fortresses, mining history, reformation history, composers, writers. Could have a much longer visit to Saxony. I added Prague, Wrocław and Quedlinburg as they were logical for my itinerary and on my very long ‘places to see’ list. In north Italy I have previously stayed in Malcesine, Verona, Trento, Vipiteno and Bressanone, plus val Gardena, val Pusteria and val Badia (and further south Milan, Cinque Terre, Volterra, Florence, Bergamo). I decided to base in the Trentino region again for the latter part of trip. Rovereto looked interesting, nice to wander and well located for day tripping. This trip evolved around family availability so changed routing a few times, factoring in public holidays, weekends, their work commitments (normally I plan a loop route without backtracking), and wasn’t the most efficient itinerary, but it met my needs. So the itinerary is Entry / exit via Munich - Regensburg 3N Prague 4N Wrocław 4 N Stadt Wehlen 6N Quedlinburg 3N Leipzig 5N Rovereto 12N Freising 1N 38N Lots of train travel, so will have time to write TR as I go. |
Travel day:
Up at 4 am Adelaide to Singapore flight = 7 hours Singapore = 9 hours layover Singapore to Munich flight = 13 hours Munich to Regensburg train = 1.5 hours Layover Singapore - decided against a transit hotel room, and opted to go exit airport and head into city (last time went to the Botanic Gardens) Note : Up to 3 days prior can apply online for an SG Arrival Card ICA provides an e-pass for a transit visit https://eservices.ica.gov.sg/sgarrivalcard/fvipa It is an easy exit from airport (scan passport, it takes seconds) to MRT station, contactless ticket system - scan your digital wallet and you enter the station, train to Bugis station, just by the Parkview (Art Deco) building (Atlas bar is apparently incredible), to the Arab quarter, Sultan Mosque is a 5 min walk - historic Arab Street, Kampong Glam, some pedestrianized streets with lots of eateries and stores, touting is illegal so no hassling, traditional shophouses, impressive murals, a Malay cultural festival was underway with food stalls, music, then returned and walked to terminal 2 to view the Jewel waterfall. https://cimg0.ibsrv.net/gimg/www.fod...2b6db4e9b.jpeg https://cimg2.ibsrv.net/gimg/www.fod...25f3be20f.jpeg https://cimg3.ibsrv.net/gimg/www.fod...e1a7acf56.jpeg Shophouses https://cimg5.ibsrv.net/gimg/www.fod...fe7909fd9.jpeg https://cimg7.ibsrv.net/gimg/www.fod...3ee6ab626.jpeg https://cimg8.ibsrv.net/gimg/www.fod...5284e27df.jpeg https://cimg9.ibsrv.net/gimg/www.fod...31e03a12b.jpeg Lots of restaurants https://cimg0.ibsrv.net/gimg/www.fod...4b80fb5bd.jpeg Great mural https://cimg1.ibsrv.net/gimg/www.fod...159898aeb.jpeg https://cimg2.ibsrv.net/gimg/www.fod...d2c340f60.jpeg Jewel at Changi airport https://cimg3.ibsrv.net/gimg/www.fod...5a83180f0.jpeg https://cimg4.ibsrv.net/gimg/www.fod...3573779ba.jpeg Walked nearly 10 km today Then a midnight flight to Munich of 13 hours So about 30 hours of travel. |
Day 1: train to Regensburg (visit Amberg)
Landed in Munich at 7 am, with a surprisingly quick EES (the EU Entry/Exit System) registration (facial and fingerprint scan), passport control and bag collection and onward train at 8:16 am with travel to Regensburg taking 1.5 hours (2 platforms underground at airport, 1 for the direct hourly regional train to Regensburg, no need to change in the city, bought €34 Bavaria ticket as it was same price as point to point and could use for whole day) It was all so efficient I arrived at my Regensburg hotel at 10 am. Regensburg 3 N Hotel Das Regensburg @ Jesuitenplatz 1 (booked single room via hotel website €339 for 3 N - was upgraded to a larger room) Close to train station, quiet square, modern rooms, great breakfasts, an outdoor terrace. Excellent hotel. Regensburg is a city in eastern Bavaria, commonly visited as part of ‘river cruise’ trade as it lies on the Danube, population 170,000 Well preserved historic architecture, doesn’t feel like a ‘big’ city, lovely setting on river, 900 year old stone bridge, huge Gothic cathedral. Chose Regensburg as an easy direct train from Munich, (then a direct train ride to Prague), a compact medieval old town, a not overwhelming jet lag recovery first stop.. touristy enough that lots of dining options on Sundays and Mondays. 10 am is far too early to check in, so left bags at the hotel and hopped on a train to Amberg 40 min away (used the same €34 Bavaria ticket as it’s an all day ticket) Individual tickets for the day would have been Munich to Regensburg to Amberg to Regensburg €34 + €23 + €23 = €80, compared to Bavaria day ticket €34 Amberg is an enchanting small medieval town, with the pretty river Vils running through it, the fortified bridge ‘Stadtbrille’, intact town walls and gates (the huge Nabburger Gate), stunning historic architecture and gardens, the Gothic church St Martin’s (built around 1500), a wonderful market square, it was a perfect half day visit. Had an outdoor lunch under an umbrella and shady trees and potted plants, such a pleasant atmosphere. Good beer, and a Bavarian meal of potato dumplings, pork, mushrooms, salad €23. There were many families with young children, and the market square was busy, but mostly heard German spoken. It felt like a town where there were more local tourists visiting on this sunny Sunday, than international travellers. https://cimg8.ibsrv.net/gimg/www.fod...8f3d3af08.jpeg City gate https://cimg0.ibsrv.net/gimg/www.fod...97a5d1db1.jpeg Walk around the walls https://cimg1.ibsrv.net/gimg/www.fod...ea2b8123d.jpeg Walk around the walls https://cimg2.ibsrv.net/gimg/www.fod...697f33c17.jpeg The fortified bridge https://cimg3.ibsrv.net/gimg/www.fod...48a1e3278.jpeg Fortified bridge https://cimg4.ibsrv.net/gimg/www.fod...e3d2df4b9.jpeg So nice and quiet https://cimg5.ibsrv.net/gimg/www.fod...16760d2ed.jpeg https://cimg6.ibsrv.net/gimg/www.fod...da7ed6b3c.jpeg Colourful riverside buildings https://cimg7.ibsrv.net/gimg/www.fod...1cf6beb7b.jpeg Charming squares https://cimg8.ibsrv.net/gimg/www.fod...8766e9e12.jpeg Lots of nice alleys to explore https://cimg0.ibsrv.net/gimg/www.fod...857c61020.jpeg Lunch was calling.. https://cimg1.ibsrv.net/gimg/www.fod...c9f39e3f9.jpeg Lunch spot https://cimg2.ibsrv.net/gimg/www.fod...56733680d.jpeg https://cimg3.ibsrv.net/gimg/www.fod...44f513139.jpeg https://cimg4.ibsrv.net/gimg/www.fod...137c5b2e7.jpeg https://cimg5.ibsrv.net/gimg/www.fod...73d1f72ce.jpeg Lunch |
Continued ..Returning to Regensburg mid afternoon for hotel checkin, then a bit of a wander this warm Sunday afternoon.
Bustling city centre, with many charming winding streets, there were lots of tourists on the historic stone bridge and groups of young Gen Y and Z’s on the riverside eating pizza, chatting, playing cards. Small bars and eateries looked busy. Cyclists seemed very patient trying to weave their way through the crowds. The massive Gothic St Peter’s cathedral is under restoration, so just photographed a part of it, has intact stained glass from the 13 and 14C. Needed a bit of quiet, so sought out somewhere to dine that offered a courtyard garden, and enjoyed a very good roasted eggplant and crispy chickpeas dish and an Aperol Spritz €20. Walked over 12 km today https://cimg0.ibsrv.net/gimg/www.fod...b482f4c20.jpeg https://cimg0.ibsrv.net/gimg/www.fod...aa43b70a9.jpeg https://cimg2.ibsrv.net/gimg/www.fod...1cc915741.jpeg https://cimg4.ibsrv.net/gimg/www.fod...b13bdeb12.jpeg https://cimg6.ibsrv.net/gimg/www.fod...f2fa7fbc3.jpeg https://cimg7.ibsrv.net/gimg/www.fod...78e2b8bc5.jpeg https://cimg8.ibsrv.net/gimg/www.fod...0526e21f8.jpeg https://cimg9.ibsrv.net/gimg/www.fod...c7cabaef0.jpeg https://cimg0.ibsrv.net/gimg/www.fod...c13ea1ecc.jpeg https://cimg1.ibsrv.net/gimg/www.fod...3c20c41f9.jpeg https://cimg2.ibsrv.net/gimg/www.fod...9c73804dc.jpeg https://cimg3.ibsrv.net/gimg/www.fod...140058600.jpeg https://cimg4.ibsrv.net/gimg/www.fod...2527fb730.jpeg |
Count me in for the journey! A very promising start ... Amberg looks fantastic, have never been there. Wow! Beautiful pictures of Regensburg also - too bad the cathedral is under scaffolding mostly.
|
Along for the (train) ride!!! Love the photos of Amberg - never heard of it
|
Adelaidean, what an interesting trip ! Following your TR closely.
|
Hi Adelaidean, deep in the heart of Bayern! I went to university with someone who came from Amberg - he was very proud and had a photo album full of postcards from there. He did return to live in Germany but not to Bayern, I believe he is in Lüneburg nowdays. Polar opposite!
Following along - loved the colourful photos of Singapore. Good idea to travel via there, much safer. I am looking forward to the Quedlinburg part. I visited Quedlinburg in 2000 and it was still being restored, so it must be fabulous now. Can't wait! Lavandula |
Thanks for joining me!
Day 2: Regensburg (bus to Kallmünz) Fabulous hotel breakfast - I love a healthy muesli, fresh fruit, sourdough bread and cheese, boiled egg, start to the day. Bought ready made lunch rolls and pastries from a nearby bakery, and took a bus to the village of Kallmünz 40 minutes away. I like to find small places to visit, to balance out the hectic side of travel. The bus route passes through farmland and villages. (Was meeting an old friend there, she has met me on several trips now. She lives in the middle Franconia region of Bavaria, so I have had previous trips visiting the smaller towns of the area, Gössweinstein, Forchheim, Pottenstein, Bayreuth, Bamberg, Coburg.. ) Kallmünz is a picturesque little village with castle ruins overlooking the river, colourful house facades, it was quiet and so nice to wander. It is on a popular cycling route, people were canoeing the river, some hiking trails with the rocky hills and forest. Gorgeous area. Nice riverside dining, coffee and cake and cocktails were on our to do list.. https://cimg5.ibsrv.net/gimg/www.fod...251d8c500.jpeg Historic stone bridge, and castle ruins https://cimg6.ibsrv.net/gimg/www.fod...8f736bada.jpeg Charming houses https://cimg7.ibsrv.net/gimg/www.fod...4f92d1c78.jpeg https://cimg8.ibsrv.net/gimg/www.fod...d49464199.jpeg it’s on a popular cycling route https://cimg9.ibsrv.net/gimg/www.fod...3acbfeb49.jpeg https://cimg0.ibsrv.net/gimg/www.fod...23260d34e.jpeg https://cimg1.ibsrv.net/gimg/www.fod...8bd0849db.jpeg We had our picnic lunch here https://cimg2.ibsrv.net/gimg/www.fod...a35208261.jpeg Quiet little place on a weekday https://cimg3.ibsrv.net/gimg/www.fod...3b37cf81a.jpeg Colourful houses https://cimg4.ibsrv.net/gimg/www.fod...5d32447a4.jpeg https://cimg5.ibsrv.net/gimg/www.fod...08b34e1a8.jpeg https://cimg6.ibsrv.net/gimg/www.fod...b685b689c.jpeg https://cimg7.ibsrv.net/gimg/www.fod...59165e249.jpeg https://cimg9.ibsrv.net/gimg/www.fod...d1fa09b08.jpeg https://cimg0.ibsrv.net/gimg/www.fod...818de20b6.jpeg https://cimg1.ibsrv.net/gimg/www.fod...e94eb0d8f.jpeg A busy cafe, tucked away in the back street on the river https://cimg2.ibsrv.net/gimg/www.fod...14e4b83d1.jpeg https://cimg3.ibsrv.net/gimg/www.fod...70c1098a7.jpeg https://cimg4.ibsrv.net/gimg/www.fod...f852a8837.jpeg https://cimg5.ibsrv.net/gimg/www.fod...f10828bde.jpeg https://cimg6.ibsrv.net/gimg/www.fod...39269baad.jpeg https://cimg7.ibsrv.net/gimg/www.fod...6054f6adb.jpeg https://cimg8.ibsrv.net/gimg/www.fod...1ad294485.jpeg https://cimg9.ibsrv.net/gimg/www.fod...7ded069d0.jpeg https://cimg0.ibsrv.net/gimg/www.fod...13dfd4e8e.jpeg Kids chasing each other round the block on their bikes https://cimg1.ibsrv.net/gimg/www.fod...1f8b3ceab.jpeg Villages on the bus route. Canola in flower. Wow, Adelaidean, you definitely manage to find small, charming towns and villages wherever you go. One thing I appreciate about Germany, though, is that many of the smaller places are accessible by train.
|
I'm so glad I saw this! I look forward to following you on this trip. Super images!
|
What a lovely place that Kallmünz is! Brilliant pictures again. Love this season for culinary reasons also - Spargel and strawberries! Yummy!
|
What a fantastic start to your trip!
Fabulous photos of such beautiful places and great to be able to travel using public transport. We are still pondering our next adventure in Europe, having been a bit rattled by all the chaos of late. Looking forward to following on from here and delighted to read that you are able to re visit family and friends. Thank you for sharing all of this. |
Loving reading this but I don't know how you kept going for so long after those long flights. I would have fallen flat on my face with so little sleep!

Farewell to lovely Regensburg
https://cimg8.ibsrv.net/gimg/www.fod...00eb480d2.jpeg https://cimg9.ibsrv.net/gimg/www.fod...29ac4a38c.jpeg time to move on.. Day 4: Regensburg to Prague Prebooked train to Prague (4 hour ride) The Prague (Praha) train station is Praha Hlavni Nadrazi (Hlavni Nadrazi is Czech for main station), often abbreviated to Praha hl.n Booked this ticket on Czech site as it is significantly cheaper for same than on Deutschebahn - as per advice on ‘Man in Seat 61’ site when I purchased the prices were : 1 st class on Czech railways is 1198czk or AUD $80 on DBB it is €122 (or AUD $201) 2nd class on Czech railways is 419czk or AUD $29 on DBB it is €36 (or AUD $60) 30 min walk from station to hotel in Mala Strana. Anyone that’s been to Prague will understand the challenge of rolling your bag on cobblestones through crowded narrow alleys, and the Charles Bridge midafternoon. I travel light, so its not too bad. My check in bag was 7.8 kg, it’s so worth minimising luggage. Had a goats cheese and pear galette at a nearby creperie as the dining room looked so appealing, and a light dinner served me well. Then on for a wander, followed by the sunset cruise (50 min booked on Get Your Guide €18) https://cimg7.ibsrv.net/gimg/www.fod...32de4cc17.jpeg https://cimg8.ibsrv.net/gimg/www.fod...3237d0cd1.jpeg https://cimg9.ibsrv.net/gimg/www.fod...9e67ccd05.jpeg https://cimg0.ibsrv.net/gimg/www.fod...288ca006a.jpeg https://cimg2.ibsrv.net/gimg/www.fod...0f255dd46.jpeg https://cimg3.ibsrv.net/gimg/www.fod...29e7c7cb1.jpeg https://cimg5.ibsrv.net/gimg/www.fod...7fe6d615f.jpeg https://cimg6.ibsrv.net/gimg/www.fod...eb7b6718b.jpeg https://cimg7.ibsrv.net/gimg/www.fod...528022663.jpeg https://cimg8.ibsrv.net/gimg/www.fod...782f67106.jpeg https://cimg9.ibsrv.net/gimg/www.fod...6b422acc4.jpeg https://cimg0.ibsrv.net/gimg/www.fod...d4200c0c4.jpeg https://cimg2.ibsrv.net/gimg/www.fod...32e54d2b9.jpeg https://cimg3.ibsrv.net/gimg/www.fod...b9742b128.jpeg https://cimg4.ibsrv.net/gimg/www.fod...e5c79452b.jpeg https://cimg5.ibsrv.net/gimg/www.fod...4684b74e1.jpeg https://cimg6.ibsrv.net/gimg/www.fod...a5839e5c0.jpeg https://cimg7.ibsrv.net/gimg/www.fod...24804b553.jpeg https://cimg8.ibsrv.net/gimg/www.fod...664a0d5bd.jpeg https://cimg9.ibsrv.net/gimg/www.fod...2dfaaa348.jpeg It was threatening rain and fairly grey, so no sunset colours on the cruise; but moody skies and thunder after the cruise, and an epic thunderstorm / lightning show from the Charles Bridge, fantastic. https://cimg6.ibsrv.net/gimg/www.fod...2f51c1c9f.jpeg Cruise https://cimg8.ibsrv.net/gimg/www.fod...87630de99.jpeg Cruise https://cimg9.ibsrv.net/gimg/www.fod...82faed596.jpeg Cruise https://cimg0.ibsrv.net/gimg/www.fod...14e60b2a4.jpeg Cruise https://cimg1.ibsrv.net/gimg/www.fod...6013e9147.jpeg Cruise https://cimg4.ibsrv.net/gimg/www.fod...2c89c58ac.jpeg Cruise https://cimg5.ibsrv.net/gimg/www.fod...454747d1a.jpeg Walking back to hotel https://cimg6.ibsrv.net/gimg/www.fod...abf2d6ea6.jpeg Walking back to hotel Walked 8 km today |

Whoa! Fantastic light! You are so lucky ;-)
Reminds me that I must return to Prague. It's been too long ... |
It's wonderful to see these charming places. It's been several years since we've been but your photography brings it all back. So lovely!

Ah, beautiful Prague. You've captured it so well, Adelaidean. Looking forward to some of the different parts of your trip that will be unfamiliar to us.

Day 5: Prague
My insomnia has some benefits - wandered the Charles Bridge before 6 am, watching the light change, enjoying the quiet. A few joggers, dog walkers and tourists about. Workers waiting for the trams, trucks delivering before pedestrian zone time restrictions. https://cimg1.ibsrv.net/gimg/www.fod...803e44fdc.jpeg Awake before dawn, so walking at first light https://cimg7.ibsrv.net/gimg/www.fod...84af4ee71.jpeg Before the crowds https://cimg8.ibsrv.net/gimg/www.fod...73c88d111.jpeg https://cimg2.ibsrv.net/gimg/www.fod...c77db4d40.jpeg Early morning light and quiet https://cimg3.ibsrv.net/gimg/www.fod...f35e11808.jpeg https://cimg4.ibsrv.net/gimg/www.fod...5e78ead98.jpeg the reward for being up early… https://cimg5.ibsrv.net/gimg/www.fod...7c6f5d1cc.jpeg https://cimg6.ibsrv.net/gimg/www.fod...abbb1f1be.jpeg https://cimg7.ibsrv.net/gimg/www.fod...364ac9b7d.jpeg https://cimg8.ibsrv.net/gimg/www.fod...a54cacfbc.jpeg Beautiful spot https://cimg1.ibsrv.net/gimg/www.fod...ac957f149.jpeg https://cimg2.ibsrv.net/gimg/www.fod...a4c6ea872.jpeg https://cimg3.ibsrv.net/gimg/www.fod...742dfa3c0.jpeg golden glow of morning https://cimg4.ibsrv.net/gimg/www.fod...36479e4c4.jpeg https://cimg6.ibsrv.net/gimg/www.fod...5190468b9.jpeg Heading back for breakfast https://cimg2.ibsrv.net/gimg/www.fod...f282edb35.jpeg https://cimg1.ibsrv.net/gimg/www.fod...59d5f0486.jpeg https://cimg2.ibsrv.net/gimg/www.fod...7bba8fddc.jpeg After a fantastic hotel breakfast, with little pots of beetroot, potato salad, capsicum and tomatoes, great breads, muesli, fruit, and hot options to order, I headed to the nearby Vrtba gardens (a little hard to find), 150czk entry to a terraced formal garden with topiary, hedges, statues, and is a small oasis of calm in a busy city. https://cimg0.ibsrv.net/gimg/www.fod...9d1aa39d0.jpeg https://cimg1.ibsrv.net/gimg/www.fod...b9858d585.jpeg https://cimg2.ibsrv.net/gimg/www.fod...4d6d7185c.jpeg https://cimg3.ibsrv.net/gimg/www.fod...228abe161.jpeg https://cimg4.ibsrv.net/gimg/www.fod...caa682551.jpeg https://cimg5.ibsrv.net/gimg/www.fod...c207f2d46.jpeg https://cimg6.ibsrv.net/gimg/www.fod...efbdcab53.jpeg Entry through this arch https://cimg7.ibsrv.net/gimg/www.fod...4f05576b7.jpeg Follow the signs https://cimg8.ibsrv.net/gimg/www.fod...ebb1df399.jpeg To the right https://cimg9.ibsrv.net/gimg/www.fod...95bdf9d3c.jpeg Gorgeous oasis in the city centre https://cimg1.ibsrv.net/gimg/www.fod...1717b2c9c.jpeg https://cimg3.ibsrv.net/gimg/www.fod...e995c7ca8.jpeg https://cimg4.ibsrv.net/gimg/www.fod...8b85b1074.jpeg https://cimg5.ibsrv.net/gimg/www.fod...aca528ac9.jpeg Terraces and rooftop views https://cimg8.ibsrv.net/gimg/www.fod...307e879fc.jpeg https://cimg9.ibsrv.net/gimg/www.fod...d01be8232.jpeg https://cimg0.ibsrv.net/gimg/www.fod...2cac188fa.jpeg https://cimg2.ibsrv.net/gimg/www.fod...11cb372fd.jpeg https://cimg3.ibsrv.net/gimg/www.fod...c84ddab15.jpeg https://cimg4.ibsrv.net/gimg/www.fod...d0e2e291a.jpeg I didn’t plan my ongoing route, so did a lot of walking, crossing the river 3 times, in the general direction of Vysehrad, but in a zigzag. Gorgeous pictures in Prague!
|
Gurl...you do hit the ground running!
Excellent photos (looks like you've got a new camera?) I've yet to be in Germany during Spargel season - wonder if it's still in season end of May??? PS - so sorry to hear about your dad. |
Adelaidean Your photos are stunning, esp the evening ones and with lightning strike! Is that the view from your hotel room? Did you find Prague to be overrun with tourists (doesn't look that way in your photos), as that's what others have told me. I have yet to visit Prague!
Melnq8 Spargel season runs from mid-late April until June 24 (st John's day, the official end day of spargel season). YOU HAVE TO TRY IT on your upcoming trip. I discovered spargelzeit 20 years ago when I was in Belgium in May. Ever since then I dream of returning for that. One May I was in Franconia and had spargel for every lunch and dinner. :) In fact 2 years ago I deliberately took my son to Germany for April vacation because I have been deprived of spargel for too many years. mid-April is early but I managed to get a few meals of it too. |
Day 6: Prague
Bought Prague Castle ticket online on Get Your Guide. Can enter the complex at 8am, but buildings open at 9am General ticket gives access to St Vitus Cathedral, Old Royal Palace, St George’s Basilica, and Golden Lane, the ticket is scanned at each site (no repeat entry) but can walk around complex and gardens without a ticket. It was a 15 minute walk from hotel, via Nerudova St, a very lovely walk. Even at 9 am, opening time, it was very busy, and the most congested is Golden Lane as it’s so narrow and the tiny houses are exactly that. The South Gardens are very attractive and have sweeping views, a very pleasant escape from the crowds. https://cimg3.ibsrv.net/gimg/www.fod...d4d4247a5.jpeg https://cimg4.ibsrv.net/gimg/www.fod...8cf112f1e.jpeg https://cimg5.ibsrv.net/gimg/www.fod...406d5e122.jpeg https://cimg6.ibsrv.net/gimg/www.fod...28664799a.jpeg https://cimg7.ibsrv.net/gimg/www.fod...be7de4a89.jpeg https://cimg9.ibsrv.net/gimg/www.fod...e6923aaed.jpeg https://cimg0.ibsrv.net/gimg/www.fod...6ca724abc.jpeg https://cimg1.ibsrv.net/gimg/www.fod...7bf7a9ac7.jpeg https://cimg2.ibsrv.net/gimg/www.fod...299d0f765.jpeg https://cimg3.ibsrv.net/gimg/www.fod...7c8ecea09.jpeg https://cimg4.ibsrv.net/gimg/www.fod...b4867b1df.jpeg https://cimg5.ibsrv.net/gimg/www.fod...56d1b8431.jpeg https://cimg6.ibsrv.net/gimg/www.fod...ceb2c5f06.jpeg https://cimg7.ibsrv.net/gimg/www.fod...0bf8cf1b6.jpeg https://cimg8.ibsrv.net/gimg/www.fod...12a49cf8b.jpeg https://cimg9.ibsrv.net/gimg/www.fod...905520d36.jpeg https://cimg0.ibsrv.net/gimg/www.fod...65db61e27.jpeg https://cimg1.ibsrv.net/gimg/www.fod...3cae65317.jpeg https://cimg2.ibsrv.net/gimg/www.fod...ea4c96805.jpeg Returned next door for dinner, an excellent beef dish, followed by a pistachio mousse dessert. Light and not overly sweet, really good. Evening walk to see the Church of our Lady before Tyn, as the golden hour / blue hour light is so atmospheric in this historic city. Fantastic summery evening vibe, with buskers, artists, people outdoors at wine bars, dogs being walked, a lively and fun atmosphere; and then arriving at that square with the gracious buildings, just wow. https://cimg5.ibsrv.net/gimg/www.fod...a10d65771.jpeg Evening https://cimg7.ibsrv.net/gimg/www.fod...9c5879ede.jpeg Lots of locals out with their dogs https://cimg9.ibsrv.net/gimg/www.fod...bef3e7744.jpeg https://cimg2.ibsrv.net/gimg/www.fod...81f2f4d8f.jpeg Gorgeous evening https://cimg3.ibsrv.net/gimg/www.fod...c095fa1f4.jpeg https://cimg6.ibsrv.net/gimg/www.fod...7315ff16a.jpeg They were great! https://cimg0.ibsrv.net/gimg/www.fod...d70598127.jpeg https://cimg1.ibsrv.net/gimg/www.fod...e8c7d7148.jpeg https://cimg2.ibsrv.net/gimg/www.fod...05291094b.jpeg https://cimg3.ibsrv.net/gimg/www.fod...e6fc70fe1.jpeg https://cimg4.ibsrv.net/gimg/www.fod...61e21bebf.jpeg https://cimg5.ibsrv.net/gimg/www.fod...916a65077.jpeg https://cimg8.ibsrv.net/gimg/www.fod...02a4af8f9.jpeg https://cimg9.ibsrv.net/gimg/www.fod...30fb84fea.jpeg Walked 8 km and 13 flights stairs today |
Thanks, Mel, yes, my father passed away in January, and in the time spent caring for him, I had lots of chats about his childhood and it meant a lot to him that I had planned this trip.
I am using a new phone for my photos now, camera is not necessary although I did bring it. It is very busy, I do wait for the sea of tourists to part… and that can take awhile… and I’m out early or later. I will post some “reality check” photos soon. |
Day 7: Prague
Visited the Wallenstein/ Waldtstein gardens (the palace was built in 1624 and now houses the Czech Senate). A large pond, hedging, garden rooms, huge trees, small fountains, it’s so pretty. I arrived at opening time of 9 am and it was quite busy already an hour later. https://cimg1.ibsrv.net/gimg/www.fod...7c5e60887.jpeg Lovely breakfast room https://cimg3.ibsrv.net/gimg/www.fod...433483055.jpeg Entrance to free garden https://cimg5.ibsrv.net/gimg/www.fod...bbf53df5b.jpeg https://cimg6.ibsrv.net/gimg/www.fod...a790672f2.jpeg https://cimg7.ibsrv.net/gimg/www.fod...4dfdf9e97.jpeg Quiet at 9 am, busy by 10am https://cimg9.ibsrv.net/gimg/www.fod...080ced03e.jpeg https://cimg0.ibsrv.net/gimg/www.fod...9f415bc26.jpeg https://cimg1.ibsrv.net/gimg/www.fod...1a7266d65.jpeg https://cimg2.ibsrv.net/gimg/www.fod...abfefaa71.jpeg https://cimg3.ibsrv.net/gimg/www.fod...5e1a5093c.jpeg Then headed to the Communism Museum, very interesting, but it is a lot of reading and standing. https://cimg9.ibsrv.net/gimg/www.fod...4cf1cea72.jpeg https://cimg0.ibsrv.net/gimg/www.fod...f84c7513c.jpeg https://cimg1.ibsrv.net/gimg/www.fod...24d690ac9.jpeg The usual foot traffic https://cimg2.ibsrv.net/gimg/www.fod...98ff6dfc1.jpeg https://cimg3.ibsrv.net/gimg/www.fod...8835c0928.jpeg https://cimg4.ibsrv.net/gimg/www.fod...41fcb0500.jpeg https://cimg5.ibsrv.net/gimg/www.fod...f9772d0cd.jpeg https://cimg6.ibsrv.net/gimg/www.fod...e47f03e58.jpeg https://cimg9.ibsrv.net/gimg/www.fod...46c75f885.jpeg https://cimg1.ibsrv.net/gimg/www.fod...93f2fd190.jpeg https://cimg2.ibsrv.net/gimg/www.fod...2067f4b91.jpeg https://cimg3.ibsrv.net/gimg/www.fod...8faed5585.jpeg https://cimg6.ibsrv.net/gimg/www.fod...7eda0a3e6.jpeg https://cimg8.ibsrv.net/gimg/www.fod...b3e4a1610.jpeg https://cimg0.ibsrv.net/gimg/www.fod...45679fb7c.jpeg https://cimg2.ibsrv.net/gimg/www.fod...42ec040ff.jpeg https://cimg3.ibsrv.net/gimg/www.fod...b251e6efc.jpeg https://cimg4.ibsrv.net/gimg/www.fod...e1ed2ab56.jpeg https://cimg5.ibsrv.net/gimg/www.fod...d979ba5e2.jpeg The route over the Charles Bridge and through to the old town square was heaving with people, my preferences for early morning and late night walking here paid off. Then wandered toward river, many more elegant buildings and high end stores, passed the Spanish synagogue and stopped at a nice Italian restaurant for lunch. Slow roasted capscicum, eggplant, zucchini and onion; under a beef tagliata. Walked 7.5 km today |
Great photos, adelaidean! 38 nights is quite a lot. I know you are an active traveler, but hope you build in some relaxation time!
I last visited Prague 12 years ago, and it was heaving with tourists then, but at that time only in old town square/astronomical clock, Wenceslas square, the Charles Bridge, and up on the main street to the castle. I stayed six nights, I think, and with that length of time it was relatively easy to take the long way to/from places, thus usually avoiding the wildly crowded areas. And we were able to see a number of less visited museums and churches that were nearly devoid of visitors--same story in every city. You are a walker, and I am a daily jogger, so my morning runs enabled me to see many parts of the city during the quiet hour and in golden light. It certainly is one of the most beautiful cities I've ever visited, with some fantastic parks. |
Loving this report and photos!
|
Enjoying your trip report. Great photos.
|
Very sorry about your father passing away. My sympathies!
Fantastic trip report and brilliant pictures. These reality check pictures of Charles Bridge and Old Town Square are shocking ... was hoping it was not too bad :( It's probably much less crowded in the outskirts. The park of Pruhonice comes to my mind. Must be so beautiful right now with rhododendron in full bloom. I also noticed that inflation has hit quite hard - sausage for 160 CZK? Yuck. And the Vysehrad church costs an admission of 130 CZK? Whoa! More please ;-) |
yk - Yay! I will make sure to try some Spargel while in Germany later this month.
|
Hi Adelaidean - I finally got my password accepted. So am back and loving your photos. Will keep checking in. Meantime have a wonderful time in Central Europe.

Day 8: Prague to Wrocław
It is a 30 min walk to the station that was inevitably going to take longer - as I went a different route (last look at Prague) and I didn’t want to rush through. https://cimg3.ibsrv.net/gimg/www.fod...084d59166.jpeg https://cimg4.ibsrv.net/gimg/www.fod...d16e47d94.jpeg https://cimg6.ibsrv.net/gimg/www.fod...3c637740d.jpeg Plus wanted to locate the old train entrance hall, which took some searching for amongst the crowds and the large station, so I allowed for that. https://cimg2.ibsrv.net/gimg/www.fod...7d2280b39.jpeg https://cimg4.ibsrv.net/gimg/www.fod...b89bd7810.jpeg https://cimg5.ibsrv.net/gimg/www.fod...93791b744.jpeg The old entrance hall is above the current one, escalators are signed to the ‘historic’ entrance https://cimg8.ibsrv.net/gimg/www.fod...1c8caab1f.jpeg Booked train at Czech Railways 2 months prior, called “first minute fare” (is the saver fare) English version https://www.cd.cz/en/default.htm 4 hours journey Prague to Wrocław (Glowny) We think my grandmother lived here in Breslau (Wroclaw) when she was very young, and moved to a village about 80 km away. She attended school there in the village (meeting my grandfather), where grades 1-8 were taught in the single classroom, by 1 teacher. My grandfather’s family farm was bequeathed to the youngest son, and the other sons learnt trades, and my grandfather became a bricklayer. The family home he bought in the village was originally wooden, but he sourced seconds and damaged bricks and bricked around the wood and plastered internally. My grandmother later worked as a cleaner at the local school in the village, and also as a maid to a wealthy family. The children (my father and aunt) were born in the village prior to the war. I don’t have a car, so won’t be visiting the village. The train journey was pleasant and comfortable; and the Wrocław train station was a surprise. https://cimg0.ibsrv.net/gimg/www.fod...19983f933.jpeg Lovely! But unexpected facade. The short walking route I took to the historic centre was a bit uninspiring, with unattractive blocks of flats, but crossing the river to the old quarter is really dramatic. Checked in to my hotel and then wandered the historic old town: 3 pedestrian squares in the old town, Market Square (Rynek) with the spectacular Gothic Town Hall and enormous tower and colourful building facades. It’s huge, pedestrianised, and so stunning. The Salt Market Square and New Market Square, adjoin, there are lots of outdoor dining options and it was buzzing in a very appealing sunny afternoon (but not too crowded) atmosphere. https://cimg4.ibsrv.net/gimg/www.fod...452f82fbe.jpeg First dwarf! https://cimg6.ibsrv.net/gimg/www.fod...74160c5be.jpeg Town hall https://cimg7.ibsrv.net/gimg/www.fod...182bd3cb0.jpeg https://cimg8.ibsrv.net/gimg/www.fod...9f7a7d6e5.jpeg https://cimg1.ibsrv.net/gimg/www.fod...1b9cd809a.jpeg Stunning main square in old quarter https://cimg3.ibsrv.net/gimg/www.fod...ab7aa9507.jpeg https://cimg4.ibsrv.net/gimg/www.fod...d3c42a416.jpeg https://cimg6.ibsrv.net/gimg/www.fod...96d08083d.jpeg https://cimg8.ibsrv.net/gimg/www.fod...289fe0ae7.jpeg https://cimg5.ibsrv.net/gimg/www.fod...ef9ab9580.jpeg The river Oder meanders around the old town with picturesque islands, canals, bridges, can walk along the waterway ‘Podwale’. https://cimg1.ibsrv.net/gimg/www.fod...89f0287b7.jpeg Huge square, pastel coloured facades, and so pretty https://cimg2.ibsrv.net/gimg/www.fod...10f4c43a6.jpeg https://cimg3.ibsrv.net/gimg/www.fod...f4d254084.jpeg Pierogi, delicious https://cimg4.ibsrv.net/gimg/www.fod...e2b7e72d5.jpeg Evening entertainment in square https://cimg4.ibsrv.net/gimg/www.fod...9c92a91ad.jpeg https://cimg5.ibsrv.net/gimg/www.fod...408d13a73.jpeg Detail on town hall https://cimg6.ibsrv.net/gimg/www.fod...776867b63.jpeg https://cimg7.ibsrv.net/gimg/www.fod...b90285dc6.jpeg 2 remaining narrow buildings of the old church yard https://cimg8.ibsrv.net/gimg/www.fod...e86e32817.jpeg https://cimg9.ibsrv.net/gimg/www.fod...2b0b2ecf4.jpeg https://cimg0.ibsrv.net/gimg/www.fod...57ddf75ad.jpeg https://cimg1.ibsrv.net/gimg/www.fod...f45f8403b.jpeg https://cimg3.ibsrv.net/gimg/www.fod...3a67287be.jpeg Wandered the market square, had a late lunch/ dinner of excellent fried pierogi, coleslaw and a beer, then walked to and around Cathedral Island (Ostrów Tumski), crossing several of the many bridges. Such a beautiful spot, the island is so peaceful, several stunning churches (the most prominent is the Cathedral of St John the Baptist), the Romanesque church of St Giles and other lovely buildings such as the archbishop’s palace; and the University botanic gardens which I’ll visit another day. https://cimg7.ibsrv.net/gimg/www.fod...111739e71.jpeg https://cimg8.ibsrv.net/gimg/www.fod...6dab9b661.jpeg https://cimg3.ibsrv.net/gimg/www.fod...68d076e19.jpeg https://cimg6.ibsrv.net/gimg/www.fod...300419495.jpeg https://cimg8.ibsrv.net/gimg/www.fod...b5f0f0ab8.jpeg https://cimg0.ibsrv.net/gimg/www.fod...25223ae8f.jpeg https://cimg1.ibsrv.net/gimg/www.fod...00427579a.jpeg https://cimg4.ibsrv.net/gimg/www.fod...52d1bd3b0.jpeg https://cimg6.ibsrv.net/gimg/www.fod...1f0b38312.jpeg https://cimg9.ibsrv.net/gimg/www.fod...366bf544b.jpeg https://cimg1.ibsrv.net/gimg/www.fod...afd3f62e2.jpeg https://cimg7.ibsrv.net/gimg/www.fod...f6718a4a4.jpeg University https://cimg8.ibsrv.net/gimg/www.fod...1e19edddb.jpeg https://cimg1.ibsrv.net/gimg/www.fod...d9a685b13.jpeg https://cimg2.ibsrv.net/gimg/www.fod...c483b39fa.jpeg I didn’t stay late enough, but a lamp lighter still lights the 102 gas street lamps on Cathedral island using a butane pole, 2 remaining in the EU (also in Zagreb) Wroclaw has hundreds of dwarf statues - The history of the dwarfs started in the 80’s when the Polish anti-communist underground movement (“Orange Alternative”) decided to fight the government by painting graffiti of little dwarfs on city walls. The first dwarf statue was placed in 2003 and now there are over 800. Each dwarf has its own character, outfit and profession, there’s a couch potato dwarf, musician dwarf, a prisoner and a ‘love lock dwarf’ whose job it is to remove those stupid vandalising bridge love locks. They are so well made with great character and really fun to find. It was a fabulous afternoon and evening getting my bearings and enjoying the atmosphere of a much quieter city. Somehow walked 12.5 km today. |
Day 9: Wrocław
Wow, breakfast deserves its’ own post! A buffet of regional dishes (salads, sour cabbage, soft cheeses mixed with vegetables), great bread, cheeses and sliced meats, chia puddings, fruit, … and option to also order from a hot menu. https://cimg6.ibsrv.net/gimg/www.fod...4a255efe2.jpeg https://cimg7.ibsrv.net/gimg/www.fod...1b1fe4342.jpeg Savoury regional dishes https://cimg8.ibsrv.net/gimg/www.fod...fc4c4d44d.jpeg https://cimg9.ibsrv.net/gimg/www.fod...314511d31.jpeg https://cimg0.ibsrv.net/gimg/www.fod...23cf194c2.jpeg https://cimg1.ibsrv.net/gimg/www.fod...f4b1b92cd.jpeg https://cimg2.ibsrv.net/gimg/www.fod...deaee1e69.jpeg Had a short wander around the old market square again, before the IPA games (international police association) start. I love gardens and this is large and winding, with many seats to stop and enjoy the moment. I chose a weekday, hoping there’d be less people and it was perfect. The tulips! Heaven. Swathes of colours, with gorgeous conifers and chestnuts as a backdrop. I spent the afternoon, sitting in various parts of the garden, messaging home, it was so relaxing. Walked 11 km today |

Here, it was peaceful, I sat for an hour or so, wandered slowly, there were young couples just strolling, a mother with her toddler and a picnic blanket, mostly singles or couples, no groups, I heard no English. |
Wroclaw is amazing (not just because of your breakfast!), sadly we didnt have time to include it in our Poland itinerary a few years ago. Sigh!
