3 weeks in Ireland
Hi all
I am planning a free for all trip to Ireland in March. I have been to Dublin and want to see other parts. I am landing in Shannon and at the present do not have any plans. Any suggestions would be most welcomed. Thanks MLC

Several years ago I had 3.5 weeks. Basically, this is what I did: landed in Shannon, visited Kildare for the National Stud, then down to Cashel, then Kinsale, Mizen pen, Sheeps Head pen, Beara Pen, thru Killarney to Dingle pen, where I stopped to rest for a few days. then up to Clare (Doolin), Clifden, Westport (climbed Crough Patrick) for several days, then up to Sligo (with side trips to Donegal & NI). At that point I had a major yearning for Dingle, so I headed south again (stopping at Clonmacnoise) for a couple days before I left.
Basically, with three weeks, it's best to pick a point to start, and just travel the coastline. While Northern Ireland and Donegal are incredible, in March it will be cold and dark-ish. While I started my trip witha series of 'one night stands', most of my other stops were for a minimum of three days. I like to stay put for several days so I can become a regular at the pub!
Start doing your research now as to what you really want to see, and then put an itinerary together. You won't have a problem finding places to stay, so you can be very flexible. My recommendation is to book your first and last nights. Personally, I like to stay in funky, historic places, that do require reservations (try hidden-ireland.com). So I made plans for a few nights, but then had flexibilty to adjust the rest of my schedule in between. Also, realize that driving takes longer than expected there, so you'll average 35mph. And while you could see the country without renting a car, it's easier to have your own wheels.

The Frommers version would not be my choice but it is certainly an option. I probably wouldn't spend the 2 days in Belfast and if I were going on such a general overall cruise of the country, would probably only do 2 days in Dublin and would leave out Waterford. I would increase the time in Kerry and Donegal. Since you've been to Dublin, you could cut that out all together. It would make for a nice trip. Particulars on where to go in those counties can follow.
