Unniworld or Viking river cruises?
Would love comments from cruisers who've been on either VIking or Uniworld. We are looking at a southern France cruise with Uniworld but a travel agent is suggesting Viking is a better line. Thoughts Fodorites?

cruisecritic.com check specific reviews for each boat
UniWorld for me there have been issues about bussing
folks around high water conditions so be careful there.
priceline.com vacationstogo.com
way cheaper than me than biased travel agents
who get bigger comissions usually om Viking.

We just came back from a Uniworld Danube cruise and I would choose to go with them to southern France in a heartbeat. That said, we were originally considering Viking when our TA suggested we look at Uniworld. I would check itineraries, and read reviews of both cruises at cruisecritic.com for a start. Some of it could be pricing, and for us, it ultimately was about the itinerary. Also, I know that it was important for us to have cabins with real double/queen beds, not the bunk kind or separate twins. We loved our Uniworld experience, we had very high expectations and they were more than met.
And as for high water conditions, if that happens, each cruiseline in the area will be affected. And as for the negative comment above about travel agents, we are very happy we have used one for the few times we have cruised. Not everything is an online bargain.

Just got back from a Uniworld Danube Cruise and do not have a single compliant about anything.
The Food, Room, Tours and entertainment were all good.
A Travel Agent booked all this for us and everything went smooth as silk !!!
We went from Bucharest Romania to Bulgaria, Serbia, Croatia, Hungary, Slovakia, Austria....then took a train from Vienna to Prague.
I also thought about Viking and AMA Waterways, but I am glad I went with Uniworld.
I would take Uniworld again and plan to for my next Riverboat Cruise

Have done both - Uniworld 9.2009 Castles along the Rhine and Viking 5.2011 - Imperial Jewels of China, both were excellent cruise lines in our opinion. Have not done Viking in Europe but we are doing their Rhine Getaway this coming December to visit the Christmas markets. I can't imagine you'd go wrong using either line.
