Skagway excursions

I can't tell from guidebooks whether you can get to White Pass by either the railroad or a bus. Can you get the same views from a bus as from the rr? Does either of them go into the Yukon Territory?
Thanks! Bill
Bill,
Are you going to Skagway by ship? If so, there are usually two excursions on the ships, one is with the railway, and one is by bus (this one has two, one bus both ways and one bus up and bike down). I personally think the train is better. The atmosphere is the ticket. The guides are very good. When you go up, those on the left side of the train see the majority of the scenery, etc. and at the top they ask you to change sides so that everyone has a chance to look. I have not been on the bus personally, but I have heard it said that the train is more interesting from the standpoint of the old railroad and the views. Couldn't answer the Yukon Territory question.

Have fun.
There are several ooptions. RR up and down, RR up Bus down, or Bus both ways. The White Pass Railroad excursion is the best way to see the scenery. We took the RR up and the Bus down. The only advantage of bus down is a little quicker. If I were to do it again I'd take the RR both ways. It really is a unique experience. Quite beautiful, comfortable and relaxing.

I'm interested in the train ride, too. I'm a little acrophobic, though. Do you get a sense of being perched on the side of a mountain on the train?

This was special because I was there on July 4. I did the bus up, bike ride down. We rode into Scagway just as the parade was starting, and our guide took us right into the parade all the way down main street... Great fun, and something we couldn't have experienced any other day of the year. It was beautiful, and an easy trip--about 5 miles on a relatively gentle slope down. both train & bus/bike have merits.

To answer Mike, there are moments when the train has a preciptous fall off (on the left going up). But if you take the train up sit on the left side and you are against the mtn.
The bus trip is less so.
The train is also (open) more. You can get up and walk to the open area between cars and get some great photos.
It is not scarry in the least. Top speed is slow (25mph or so)

2 years ago I went on HAL to Alaska, and did both the train and the bus rides. The train was, by far, the better of the two. You get about the same scenery on both. I was nervous about the drop-offs, too, but after a few minutes, I was outside looking at everything at once! Don't miss it.

I took the White Pass train up 2 years ago and the bus back. I really enjoyed the trip. The scenery was fantastic. This was where I saw my one and only moose on the trip. Last year I took the city tour and then walked the town.

Haave a good trip.
