Rent a taxi for the day in Playa Del Carmen?
Has anyone rented a taxi for the day while in Playa Del Carmen? Was it fine? Did you have any problems? Do you have any advise? How much should we pay? How much should we tip (providing we get good service)?
Thanks for your help.
Colman

Colman, we were in Cancun in December and rented a car for a day which was a great way to get around. The roads are paved now and well marked. The road to Coba was a bit bumpy and you have to watch out for speed bumps, stray dogs and wandering poultry. A regular car with automatic/air was less than $30. I assume you can get the same prices near Playa del Carmen if you reserve in advance.

If it's your first visit to the area, I would skip Coba, it was the least interesting and excavated of the three Mayan ruins in the area, Chichen Itza being the most impressive but furthest, Tulum having a really nice setting on the water and relatively close to Playa del Carmen.

Xelha, which used to be an inexpensive and uncrowded place to snorkel, has turned into a water park with a $25 admission ($19 on weekends). We got there too late in the day to visit but I've heard there's enough there to keep you busy all day. There are places near to Akumal where you can snorkel for free off the beach. We didn't see a lot of fish where we were but we did see a giant turtle and my brother in law said he saw bunches of them in a different spot.

The other think we didn't get a chance to check out were any of the cenotes which are scattered about in that area.

The last time we were in Playa del Carmen on a cruise stopover, we rented a small 4-door car w/air conditioning for $25 for the day. There are several rental agencies right near the pier and their prices are highly competitive. I suggest you rent a car so you can stop along the beaches and go for a swim.
