For both the family & the cruisers who were exposed to the entire drama.

On our April cruise, a passenger who became very ill was taken off the ship at the first port. Then I heard that another died on board. I guess a cruise ship is like a slice of life, you get 2,000 odd people together & there are a lot of happenings.

These ships are getting bigger and bigger - the amount of people on them is the size of a small city - what are they doing about security ? Are there police on these ships ? A small city would definitely have a police force.

Unless Security is very low profile, I've never noticed any around. In fact, on our April cruise, we were in the casino, and I saw a gentleman in a wheelchair, hooked up to 3 oxygen tanks, with a tube in his nose, SMOKING. I asked a croupier to get security, and never did see anyone.

I actually saw quite a bit of security prior to the incident. We are going on th RCC in Decmeber to the Caribbean. I have a feeling it will be a better cruise but of course we are now very anxious about cruising!

I would think the woman would waste no time seeking an attorneys help and input. If he had a policy most don't cover if it is ruled a suicide. She is covering her bases she needs to raise her kids! That is more than likely the reason. Sad.

Well, then, like I asked earlier, how did this happen? It was either a suicide or murder. You don't simply fall over a railing. It's too high.

It was clearly a suicide, he placed a chair under the railing of the balcony and jumped, his wife even admitted that. I believe she got a lawyer to try to sue Carnival saying that the bartender served him too much alcohol...and yes life insurance will not be paid on a suicide so she is tring to cover her husbands butt!

Actually some insurance companies do cover suicide, however there is a 2 year time limit after the policy is purchased for the insurance to cover the event. I remember this specifically because our sales agent joked that we had to wait 2 years before we could do such a thing. Terrible subject.:( Anyways it is a sad tragedy and unfortunately the open water makes a rash decision easier to follow through with.

This is a very sad story.

However, as usual, most people do recover and try to pass the blame along and at the same time, make a few bucks.

It is better to make few bucks then not to make a few bucks plus I think it helps to forget the pain...does it? ll these commotions - lawyers, courts, it should be keeping people pretty busy and help dealing with lost...am I totally unresonable?

No, you make a good point, Ziana -- finding someone to blame can take away some of the sense of powerlessness. (I think that's a major reason for lawsuits in general.) Obviously it's not a healthy way to deal with loss, but it IS a distraction. But you can only distract yourself for so long.

It's crazy how many "events" happen on cruise ships...guess it's just a numbers game!

I read that the wife had be on him about his drinking and they had been arguing about this alot. However who really knows whay she feels or thinks? We may never find out. More importantly I think are the kids and their welfare. They witnessed this.

I am frustrated with the blame game. I wish people would take responsibility for their own actions. These are adults and I don't agree with suing everytime someone makes their own bad decision. I am of the opinion it is not the cruise line's responsibility to watch each and every passenger 24 hours a day. Some people make bad decisions and it is simply a tragedy and/or accident....if the man was on a plane and went into the restroom after a fight with his wife and hung himself, should the family sue the airline ? While I'm sure some are actually suicidal,I wonder how many of the people that jump off actually intend to kill themselves..I'd bet a few of them spontaniously went for the drama of jumping overboard,never even thinking about the fact that they would get sucked under the ship. Maybe they (incorrectly)assume the ship will just be able to stop on a dime and pick them up...too many movies make impossible stunts look possible!

I do not know if she is suing for sure, it was mentioned in a news article.
